Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

Suggestions for what to do in ...

AUH (Abu Dhabi) (Check Groupon):
Grand Mosque [wiki] [map]
Kayak the mangroves [trip advisor] [map]
Ferrari World [trip advisor] [map]
Dune bashing/camel ride [trip advisor]

Hotels:
Qsar al Sarab

CPT (Capetown):
Take cable car to top of Table Mountain
Drive the scenic drive to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
See Robben Island prison, home to Nelson Mandela for 18 years
V&A Waterfront
Hop-on-Hop Off Bus Cape town (brings you to all scenic landscapes of Cape town (incl Camps bay) w/o hassle and security concerns

JNB (Johannesburg):
Nelson Mandela Square (JNB) / also visit Butchers steak restaurant there
Guided tour to Soweto (JNB)

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

MNL (Manila):
Ask on FT (in Destinations) - There are too many islands and beaches in the Philippines to list here.
If you fancy another destination:

$175 R/T to HKG or 7500 Avios
Almost all of Asia is under $200 with LCCs

Family of Four

I may get burned for asking since it's been discussed before, but what's the
best way to credit this trip?

Going from JFK-AUH-BOM

COA 1: take the 50% on Etihad and Pool all the miles to one account?

COA 2: Take the ANA 50% miles and use them on Star A someday.

COA 3: Take 50% etihad mileage for the Usa-AUH trip, and then switch your FF in AUH to credit to AA the AUH-BOM portion. Has that posted successfully for anyone to switch the number halfway through your trip in AUH?

COA 4: Leave all the FF numbers empty and do COA 3 by faxing/emailing in boarding passes? seems like a hassle.

Is there a COA 5?

Thanks.

My wife didn't want to do it but after she said she had a blast(were both 64 y/o). We booked it through the Hotel and I felt it was reasonable with Emirates Travel. Price ended up being ~$65-70 US PP maybe would have been cheaper out of Dubai with shorter travel? She also had a great time with the Falcon.
We also went on the Mangrove Kayaking and I recognized the driver who had a different group 2 days earlier on the Safari trip.

One tip if you can help it don't sit in the 3rd row of seats. It right over the rear axle and easy to get motion sickness. Both of the people in our Toyota Land cruiser had to find a place to barf by our 1st stop lol.
My friend and I both loved the rear seats--they provided the most bumps Granted, we are both 19 year old college students....so it depends on the demographics I think!

It depends on what you want out of it. Many of us took EY and got Amazon gift cards in exchange, which was perfect. If you are looking for something else miles wise, go with AA. (#3?) or ANA #2

Lol the 2 girls were in their early 20's so it might have just of been them. My wife had a front seat and loved watching what was coming. The girl next to me in the middle of the 2nd seat never let go of the roll bar.

I had family go through groupon last month costing 99AED and they mentioned that it was too short - Only went on one hill.
Ours was also 175 AED. But it was ~5 hrs from beginning to end. Pick up in Abu Dhabi was 3:30 and got back to hotel just before 9PM.
With Kayaking for 3 hrs the next day. Of course it was a 2 person kayak with only one person paddling lol.

Ideally looking for miles to redeem for future flight on EY, AA, or Star?

but otherwise will take the gift cards.

Holy moly. Definitely leaving the melatonin at home and only bringing Lunesta (which I have an rx for).

EY has so many partners, all of which credit at 50%

Don't just assume the 3 choices a blogger mentions are best for you.

Brief TR ORD-AUH-ORD

Very happy we booked and completed the trip; surreal, enlightening, enjoyable, memorable, only slightly arduous, and now off the bucket list. Spring Break in the Middle East; beats Epcot.

Checked in online, flew SWA to MDW then train to ORD. Swissport agent at beginning of line using TLAR/SWAG method of weighing hand luggage; 50% success at getting stickers there, directed to luggage check-in (checking 2 bags anyways), second agent weighed and stickered.

Sloooww (~20) min security line T5, low staffed TSA but very friendly and humane- no gruffness, very calming and smiling. Pleasantly odd.

Used Chase Ink/Lounge Club benefit at Air France club- decent sandwiches, snacks, puddings, drinks.

Boarding started on time; we selected back of the plane and boarded Zone 3, which seemed to be the first one after Bidness/Disabled/Small children.

Lady luck smiled upon us (with some help from Expert Flyer) and our party of 4 had two middle rows. Fingers crossed throughout boarding and sigh of relief upon door close and center seats still empty.

Cabin crew were friendly, helpful, omnipresent throughout the flight; so refreshing to have a request met with, "Yes" rather than a huff, silence, or rolled eyes.

Food was fine; I'm not an Indian aficionado though I found the items tasty. Klondike bars mid-flight, and a sandwich towards the end. Food was always available in the rear galley for the asking.

At least two other 'Christmas Day' deal families on the jet; both from Wisconsin. We ended up bumping into one at the Burj Khalifa two days later. Small town.

Arrival/Immigration/Customs: coming from the back of the plane, by the time we hit Immigration there was no line. We filled out the dubiously-worded form and were through in enough time to scan and stamp passports.

We rented a car from Budget and had downloaded the Middle East maps for our Garmin; that was the most disappointing part of the trip- though the roads all appeared, the POI were severely lacking- very few hotels, restaurants, etc. So we'd look them up on our phones, using Google Maps, screenshot them, then pull up the Garmin and put in a marker. Cumbersome.

Driving in the UAE was not significantly different than in the US; less sophisticated/precise than Germany, most people doing the right things, but 10-15% clueless or careless. Make sure you have coverage and keep an eye in the rearview.

We stayed at the Park Inn Yas Island which was great. We're Gold with Carlson and were upgraded to balcony.

Dubai for a day included the Burj Khalifa and Ski Dubai.

Would have liked to spend more time in Al Ain; I'd recommend 2 days for the Zoo, 3 museums, camel trading/auction, and the archaeology site.

Return flight was.... endurable. Didn't sleep, left the hotel at 0001, took 2:45 from car drop to getting on the plane. Check-in for flight T3 at the far-left desks, one snaking line. Friendly and helpful agents. Biggest line/wait was at US-bound security point. Passport control, first security screen, CBP all less than 5 min.

Filled water bottles post-CBP, in the gate area. Bathrooms and drinking fountain to the far right, and downstairs- opposite the small but adequate food/drink kiosk.

Return flight more full but again more empty seats in waaay back of the bus. Service again was pleasant, but you can't completely sugar coat 14.5 hours in a metal tube. Watched some Brit sitcoms and Paddington. Slept. Woke up with 8 hours to go...

Nice to arrive in ORD as a domestic flight, but waiting for bags (ours was on the last bin unloaded) buffered the joy.

Miles for this trip?

Hi,
Sorry if this is already discussed here.
I just completed my trip JFK-AUH-BLR without any problem. Very happy that I could secure this lovely deal. Anyways, I have provided my AA AAdvantage Number to my trip and would like to know if I will get any miles for this travel?

It was discussed. I'm confident you can find the answer if you spend less than 10 minutes of your time, instead of expecting us to waste our time.

Hey there! Welcome to FT. Unfortunately, the trip from JFK-AUH will not give you AA miles. This is from the AA website:

Etihad Airways operated and marketed flights between Chicago (ORD), Dallas/Ft Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), Washington Dulles (IAD),Toronto (YYZ) and Abu Dhabi are not eligible for mileage accrual
You should get points on the AUH-BLR leg, however, but it won't be as much had you gotten the JFK-AUH as well.

You know, in the time it took you to type that, you very well could have simply answered the question.

The answer to that question has been posted in this thread more times than anyone could count. If people are too lazy to search for their own answers, then why should someone else take the time to answer their question.

And, if you think about it, in the amount of time it took him to register and ask the question, he could have found the answer.

Thanks for the heads up about the 3rd row seats! I do not want to be the one tossing my cookies.

That's fine. I enjoy helping people. If I know the answer, it takes less than a minute of my time to respond. If I'm really worried about a minute of my life, I've got bigger problems.
