Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

Suggestions for what to do in ...

AUH (Abu Dhabi) (Check Groupon):
Grand Mosque [wiki] [map]
Kayak the mangroves [trip advisor] [map]
Ferrari World [trip advisor] [map]
Dune bashing/camel ride [trip advisor]

Hotels:
Qsar al Sarab

CPT (Capetown):
Take cable car to top of Table Mountain
Drive the scenic drive to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
See Robben Island prison, home to Nelson Mandela for 18 years
V&A Waterfront

JNB (Johannesburg):
Nelson Mandela Square (JNB) / also visit Butchers steak restaurant there
Guided tour to Soweto (JNB)

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

MNL (Manila):
Ask on FT (in Destinations) - There are too many islands and beaches in the Philippines to list here.
If you fancy another destination:

Almost all of Asia is under $200 with LCCs

EY is a great airline, when you aren't trying to screw them over. I used AA miles to fly F LAX-JFK-AUH-MLE. AA failed to deliver my wife's bag to EY in JFK which we discovered on our overnight in AUH. As we were staying at the Park Hyatt in the Maldives the only way to get there is the hotel's boat. Two days later EY chartered a sea plane from MLE to deliver my wife's bag to the hotel. Now that is service!

Will you get that same level of service on a $187 coach ticket? No. Will they still fly you from JFK to AUH? Yes. Take it or leave it.
Yeah, that's my point. A lot of people want to leave it but Etihad won't let it happen. It shouldn't take weeks of phone call ping pong, or months as it will soon be for some, to process a refund. At this point, they are punishing potential flyers. And for what? Booking a mistake fare? If that's "trying to screw them over" then all the travel blogs should be renamed, "How to screw over the airlines."

If anyone here has requested a refund, and actually received their money back from Etihad, please tell us your experience. I'm not holding my breath, however. Perhaps, as skunker suggests, people who booked the mistake fares are too ghetto for Etihad to bother with. Or they figure people will get tired and abandon the refund process. Who knows? Etihad's behavior simply makes no sense.

Either way, it's no longer puzzling why the world's 7th ranked airline in 2013 according to Skytrax abruptly withdrew from that ratings system the following year. Etihad can call it a dispute over methodology all they want, but one look at their current passenger reviews on Skytrax shows them well on their way to becoming another low-rated airline.

I haven't seen many people claim they were denied refunds; most on here rather just insist that they are entitled to the routing they booked on the dates they booked on specific aircraft. Moreover, I don't think a change from a connection to a nonstop is a change that requires Etihad to refund the ticket at all.

Questions and comments about Etihad generally that have nothing to do with this fare belong in the Etihad forum.

Has anyone tried crediting their American flights to Alaska? My AA legs were booked into O, which started earning on AS on February 1. The AS site says the flights need to be marketed and operated by AA, but I've also seen reports of people getting credit for non-partner codeshares on AA metal.

Those legs between ORD and Europe will be oh so much more valuable for AS (that is, status qualifying)

You've already made it clear that you have a low opinion of the people trying to keep their original itineraries, so insisting "Questions and comments about Etihad generally that have nothing to do with this fare belong in the Etihad forum" is silly. Anyway, the airline giving people the runaround who simply want to cancel has nothing to do with this fare? Seriously?

As for the refunds, it's Etihad's idea. That's information from their phone agents, that they are allowing cancellation without penalty. However, it seems that cancellation and refund mean two different things to Etihad, so I was asking if anyone actually received their money back. Since that does not apply to you, you needn't have responded as this thread has seen enough of the Etihad cheerleading.

Why would the AS be more valuable than AA miles?

It was a non refundable fare. EY is doing favor to let people get their money back. I sincerely wish EY give as much trouble as possible to those greedy people who think they are entitled to demand how smooth or difficult an airline make the process of getting refunds on non-refundable tickets!!

EY is better off not having these people as future customers anyway. EY is certainly guilty of not throwing rule book at these people from the beginning.

Because they would (potentially) be elite-qualifying miles.

*Ding ding!*

I also have status on AS, so I get bonus miles.

"These people" are the reason this website even exists. If it's not your scene there's always the Lonely Planet forums...

I have no problem with people booking mistake fares in general or this fare specifically, but if you think EY is being difficult you are right. That is their way when it comes to mistake fares-they honor them but make it difficult for the flyers. Go read about their tactics on the CMB-DFW F fare and you'll see this fare is a walk in the park.

It was $187. If you are worried about how long it takes to get a refund then you can't afford to book mistake fares.

It is a gamble we all take and knowing the consequences booking these. If you can't gamble, don't play.

How is a consumer supposed to know a fare is a mistake?

Yeah, there are a lot of people flying these fares that didn't know they were mistakes.

There were a whole bunch of people on my JFK-AUH flight who were talking about how they booked it through a 'Priceline sale for $300'. Just to give an idea as to how travel-savvy they were, when I mentioned that I was going to Manila, they asked where Manila was.

Still though, these wouldn't be the ones insisting on getting AA RDM.
