Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

MNL (Manila):
Ask on FT (in Destinations) - There are too many islands and beaches in the Philippines to list here.

Greetings from Manila! (brief review of EY on the outbound)

Greetings to everyone from Manila! really grueling trip over...a $39 + 20 (bag) flight on Frontier, 6 hours in IAD, a 14.5 hour flight to AUH, 7.5 hours there and an 8.5-hour flight to Manila. One of the furthest destinations on the deal and the only SE Asian one, at $344.

IAD really bad for landside places to hang out, I found. Spent some time at the one Starbucks waiting for EY check-in to open. Etihad's "thing" seems to be weighing carry-ons and enforcing the 7kg limit, at least on that flight. Maybe they have trouble with wheeled items falling out of bin doors. They had another scale for the same purpose at the gate.

(BTW, all the following pertains to coach. Can't comment on the other classes...)

Plane was a 787 and maybe 60% full, but that didn't keep me from getting a full 3-row with a screaming, seat-kicking kid behind. I was aggressive about re-seating, moving to a bulkhead with lots of legroom but the immovable armrests. Was able to make it work.

Would urge everyone to order special meals like I did, such as a seafood meal. The regular meals are much like a Muslim special meal would be on a U.S. carrier, and while chicken or lamb biryani or vegetable curry might make for an interesting cross-cultural experience, I wasn't really up for it. Could also mess with you a bit if you have GERD.

They do also have Kronenbourg and 2 other beers, wines and other firewater available.

The seat move messed up the special meal, so I got it delivered to the new seat, but it came without silverware. The flight-attendant call looks nice on the handset but doesn't really do anything, as I found over the next several minutes. Good thing it wasn't a medical emergency. It kinda reminds me of Asian carriers, where FAs can seem a bit like automatons, fine for doing the programmed tasks but not so great for anything going off the tracks.

Maybe Emiratis are also good at functioning in dry environments with minimal water, but for the rest of us the periodic water trays or lack thereof were another ding. It was at least as infrequent as you usually get with U.S. carriers.

Windows were dimmed most of the time, with the route going across the Mediterranean, down the Red Sea and across Saudi Arabia and on in.

AUH airport is getting some construction, but the old section was where most people waited things out. Lots of duty free, of course, and a busy McDonald's.

The flight to MNL leaving at 3:05 a.m. Abu Dhabi time was 100% full and left from one of the old gates (the round pods, seating maybe 50 for a 777 with 300+). So there was a long line just to get in the gate. Anyone who's ever flown on an international flight going into the Philippines can attest that Pinoys are in a class by themselves when it comes to absolutely maxing out baggage allowances at all levels. Even with lots of rolling bags gate-checked there were bags on top of bags all up and down the bins. The plane also had some cargo that was late to get loaded (possibly from all the checked bags), and it left about 45 minutes late.

That trip had a snack at first and the biggest meal (lunch) around 2 hours before landing. Again, I was glad I had ordered the special meal. After the 14.5 hour marathon this flight didn't seem as long. The crew was slightly better, though one Brit FA was a bit like I'd imagine Adele would be if she tried to be an FA. Maybe she was just having a bad day (totally full flights to MNL can cause that, though the passengers tend to have better attitudes about conditions than westerners would).

I stopped worrying too much about the mistake fare hurting EY financially, as few people on the flight looked like the fit the profile of someone who would have caught the deal. Most looked like returning OFWs.

The plane arrives around 4 p.m. at Terminal 1 (the old warhorse). In addition to the immigration form, pax had to fill out a yellow Ebola/MERs form, and they had the quarantine checkpoint before immigration (collecting forms, asking questions, etc.) They're rebuilding the immigration area to give more space, and that took only about 10 minutes (have seen it much worse). It must've taken 45 minutes to get all the bags on the belt, with most people stacking 'em high on the carts. I had only one bag and, 'natch, it was in the last batch to come out.

The late flight had thrown me into the peak of rush hour. The yellow metered taxi stalled out twice in the first mile and the driver took me back to terminal 2 departures, where he got me a regular metered taxi (driver on his third day) that was maybe 40% of what the yellow one would have cost. So it worked out.

Overall the newer planes are an asset, but the food won't be to everyone's liking and about the best I can say about the service is that it can be inconsistent, at least in the back. Will see how things work out on the return in 5 days or so.

Question and it might be better served in another thread:
Have a flight on JetBlue that had a schedule change to where I now arrive approx 1:40 before my EY flight out of JFK. Is this enough time? Can JetBlue check me in for my flight at my origin? Any help is much appreciated.

They were very stingy in AUH about weight, but not ORD. In AUH, my friend's first bag was 12 kg and mine was 9. In order to get by, the worker forced us to move 2kg from his bag to my bag. (?) Made no sense, but we didn't argue.

The 787 I was on from AUH-IAD on Wednesday had one open Y seat-- right inbetween the 2 of us. We had originally booked the last two seats in the last row, but got moved to the row in front without us noticing.

I second the special meals. The gluten free meals were great both ways, except for the bread. But, my mom says the gluten free bread here in the US is bad as well.

1. Approx 1:40 is very inadequate before my EY flight out of JFK.
If there are any delays on the tarmac after landing, you will be in trouble.
You may want to get in at least 2 hours and possibly 3 hours at JFK.

2. Can JetBlue check me in for my flight at my origin?
You can check in online for your EY flight. However one has to go and meet an EY agent to have documents verified and a new BP will be handed over to you.
If you are checking any baggage, Jet Blue can check baggage through to EY, if Jet Blue has an interlining agreement with EY. You should check online at Jet Blue to enquire whether they can check baggage through to your final destination.
If your bags are checked through by Jet Blue when you arrive at JFK you may want to show the bag tags to the EY staff and tell them you have baggage checked through.

My friend didn't talk to anyone from EY until we boarded- didn't need a new BP or anything.

No AA miles for flights from the US to AUH (as I've now discovered).

Thanks - yes, I knew about flights from the US to AUH. But I still have one leg that is on AA - JFK to CDG - and I just want to make sure I will get credit for those miles.

We got back from our trip after taking JFK-AUH-JFK. Everything was smooth operating and we really enjoyed our time in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I would definitely recommend getting one of the 2-seaters in the back if you can swing it. We had the 2-seater behind the first 2-seater and it was much better as the seats were not as offset with the IFEs on the seatbacks in front of you and I never once had anyone bump my row...going over I was in the aisle of the middle 4 and people were constantly bumping my row which made it impossible to sleep.

Some of our highlights which I would highly recommend are the desert dinner safari with Platinum Heritage (with the vintage LRs), High Tea at the At.mosphere restaurant at the Burj Khalifa, Middle Eastern food tour w/ Frying Pan Adventures, abra ride across the creek in Old Dubai, Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, etc. We also stayed at the PArk Hyatt while in Dubai and it is just a superb property.

Etihad minimum check-in at JFK is 60 minutes, but they recommend 120 min.

If your JetBlue flight changed schedule by 30+ minutes, you can get on a different flight that day for free. That is the best idea, as you want more than 40 minutes time in case of delay.

For those who asked, with the seafood meal on EY it was always a white fish filet on the big meals (once covered by some rice with a bit of spice), and on a dinner there was also a smoked salmon salad. On one of the snacks the sandwich was tuna fish rather than mystery meat.

Also forgot to mention that they handed out Klondike bars as the midflight snack on the IAD-AUH flight.

In theory, yes. You should be able to ask AA to give you a pass to get through security so you can access the lounge.

No, and when I emailed to ask about them, they have refused to credit me for the promotion unless I can produce the original marketing email that was sent to me. This is despite entering my Guest # in the promotion page and it giving me the confirmation message.
