Stayed at the Ritz. It's actually got 3 parts: 1) basic Marriott + a little; 2) concierge floor type operation; and 3) super private. #2 is worth it. #1 is a bit worn and #3 isn't worth it.

Absent extraordinary circumstances, they don't UG between the three places, each of which has its own entrance and check-in. So, if you want #3, you will pay brutally. #2 isn't cheap, but it's nice.

What was the major grievance?

Neighborhood? Check. Not that much to do.

An older building turned into a hotel? Check. Not that spacious.

Fitness center? Check. Pretty limited.

But the staff is great. CL rooms are nicely set up. This place reminds me of the Ren Providence which is also a reclaimed property a little off the beaten path. But it is very close to the federal building if you have business there.

We got a very oddly shaped room that wasn't that large in comparison. As a plat, I'm not an upgrade-whore, but I expect at least expect to get a decent room layout.

Also, they refused me late checkout. Like, wouldn't even give me an hour. Also that bar seemed to be closed at odd hours, like 7 pm on a weekend. I was always left with the impression that the place was deserted.

Actually as dumpy as the neighborhood was, the nasty-ish convenience store up the street had great chicken.

ETA - not to be too nit picky, but the place smelled funny to me too. Smelled like I was in Victoria's Secrets or something.....way too much artificial scents put out.

Yes, yes, yes!

Also, I agree that the Marriott Canal Street is not that great a place, especially when compared with the JW. My wife loves the JW. I stayed with her one time; it has a nice executive lounge.

love the JW

Lounge at JW basically laid out a meal during my most recent stay (love those lamb lollipops!). Pool is a joke - don't bother with it. Although parking is standard Nawlins price, access to entrance is nice and simple. Location near FQ and nearby stores (CVS, Walgreens) super convenient. Beds are comfy but that could be assisted by Pat O's hurricanes....

I have never stayed at the ritz, but between the Ren and the JW, I would go JW anyday.
I was dissapointed with the Ren Pere's service, and the rooms were very small.
At the JW I was upgraded to a corner suite and really enjoyed my stay from start to finish.
Location wise for the FQ I would rank them Ritz,JW, and then Ren but they are all prime real estate.

And, I'm just the opposite from the above post. However, I was there much more pre-Katrina than post-Katrina, so things may have changed.

I like the PM. I almost always get a good room, and the lounge is good. The night lounge folks used to save a few Otis Spunkmeyer cookies for the late arriving folks just before the lounge closed for the night. However, I know the PW has some small rooms, so if you get one of those, you will get to spend lots of up close and personal time with your wife (which can be a good or bad thing)

The JW is fine, and as plat, I get a good room, but it is a marriott like any other marriott.

Have been at the Ritz a couple of times, and at least the rooms I had were the least inspired Ritz rooms anywhere.

The Ritz is closest the French Quarter, but all are very close. The JW is a little closer to the casino, but again, they are all tightly bunched.

JW is very nice. Have stayed there several times.

Regular Marriott across the street did not post my points, still fighting that battle.

I usually stay at the Ren Arts. Lots of good dining near by, a short walk to the French Qtr and Lucy's Bar is right across the street for some local flavor.

New Orleans for an Anniversary - Marriott Options

I'm taking my wife to New Orleans for a surprise 3 years dating and 6 months married anniversary (we look for good excuses to travel!) the 2nd weekend in December.

I've got 2 Marriott Cat 1-4 certs, 1 cat 5 cert, and friends and family discount rates available at the JW Marriott ($99), Ren Pere ($79), and the NOLA Marriott ($89).

I'd really like to use up my Cat 1-4 certs but I'm a little skeptical of the options in NOLA. The CY near the French Qtr is where I have a res using the certs now but the reviews on TripAdvisor are marginal. The SHS and CY Convention center are rated a bit better but they seem to be a bit farther away from the action.

Are the full service options worth it? I'm going to lose the 1-4 certs on 12/31/11 and I probably can find a better use for the 1-5 cert.

Please note, I saw some older threads on this topic but I'd like some recent thoughts.

Thanks!

We just did a weekend at the JW and loved it. Great location. Spacious corner room. Staff was very pleasant and accommodating.

As a frequent NOLA visitor, we've stayed most everywhere except Marriott properties (RC excepted). We have some points we need to burn and were looking at the properties here and also decided on the JW. The Renaissance Arts is supposedly nice, though sort of far from the French Quarter.
