Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

I have an OC1-5 certificate and its expiration date in my account is August 15, so tomorrow. However the confirmation e-mail says valid through August 15, 2019. Can I convert it tomorrow or does it have to be done before the 15th? And in case you're wondering why I want to cut it that close it's because the 15th is a Saturday next year and it's a bank holiday weekend here, so that would be a good week to use it as a last resort if necessary.

Also, does the 15th then have to be my check-out date, or can it be the last of 7 nights?

The first rep immediately qualified herself out, told me she had no clue what to do, and forwarded me to an "elite rep".

Took that rep about 10 minutes to deal with everything. I had NOT downgraded the OC6 in advance and the rep had never heard of the 30k point difference but once she got into the system that holds old certs, a procedure popped up to tell her the 30k difference would automatically show up in my account and that there was no process needed to make it happen.

A few minutes after the call, my account showed two NC4 certs with a fresh year of expiration, and activity of +120k from the canceled certs then -90k for the new certs, netting the +30k differential.

So in these final days, it seems everything is a very smooth process now.....
Sorry for being annoying but just to confirm: you converted ON the expiration date in your account?

you should probably convert now now instead of waiting because it might take you a while to find a competent agent to do it. Plus i believe it is stay through date start by date. Then again reports have been you can extend it once but I wouldn’t count on it.

It's not worth the risk. I called 3 days in advance of my expiration date and the agent said I had less than 24 hours left to convert it. No idea where they got that number, but I'd probably do the conversion 4-7 days in advance to be safe.

But with Marriott 330-day advanced booking, all the advance reservations prior to 8/18/2018 have now expired. All the OC TPs expire this week. So some of the info you quoted (several months ago) do not apply any more.

3/5/2019 is the yearly category change date. It does not directly impact the OC TP. But it complicates matter even more.
I was talking about reservations not yet attached by NC TPs before 3/5/2019, not OC TPs. The issue is whether NC TPs can be attached to a point reservation at the pre-change category.

have multiple reports that TP certificates cannot be attached to a points advance reservation at pre-3/5 category. (Unless it was already attached pre-3/5)

A CSR told me there is no expiry date on a 7N/5Ntravel certificate- that it can be renewed multiple times. Is this true?

I just called to convert mine and asked to verify but I was told no.

I wasn't sure I had the "right" agent on the phone at first but everything went smoothly: NC1-4 valid through August 14, 2020, +45k and -45k showing on the app, and the new award confirmation and old award cancellation e-mails arrived within 10 minutes.

The agent tried to put me on hold. Very nicely, I explained that I know the system is very tricky with this conversion and that I wanted to cancel my certificate only if she was able to convert it to a QP91. She said she understood and put me on hold. While I was on hold, I saw the certificate taken out of my account, cancelled, and converted to a NC4. When she came back on the line, she was actually quite curt and said, "I have cancelled your old certificate. There are no upgrades. I happen to like my job and don't want to lose it by doing something that I know is not allowed. Hold please for a loyalty specialist." I tried to plead my case again (super nicely) and she cut me off mid-sentence and suddenly I was transferred to a loyalty specialist. I waited on hold for 18 minutes at which point a "supervisor" answered my call. She was very polite but explicitly said that no modifications could be made and that she would open up a case for me. She asked if I wanted to be contacted via phone or email regarding my case. I told her by phone.
This morning I got an email from Marriott regarding my case. It said, "I'm very sorry but we are unable to upgrade any travel package in our system."
I tried to follow all the tips and suggestions on this thread. I never used the word "upgrade." I was super nice and friendly and tried to explain everything very specifically. No luck for me!
Anyone have any great suggestions for an amazing Category 4 hotel for a one week stay with two small kids?
How small are the kids? I had a great time in Portland with the family staying at the RI at PDX. I didn't use the 7 night certificate as we split our time between Portland and Seattle, but I would totally recommend it. I am actually contemplating doing the trip again this year and using the full 7 nights there, especially if we go during snow season. The kids had a blast.

I don't know if I just got extremely lucky, or if they've decided to be a bit more lenient in these last couple of days but...

I tried calling in to get two OC5s converted to a NC1-4 and a NC5 a few weeks ago, with no luck.

I just called the regular US support line again, mostly resigned to just getting two NC1-4s.

Asked, just in case, if I could convert my P830 and my 830T to one regular NC1-4 and one QP91 and said it should cost 60,000 points

Woman on the other end said no problem, went away for 2 mins, came back and said it was done.

I checked the app before even hanging up the call, and an NC1-4 and an NC5 were there and 60,000 points were gone.

I was able to extend my NC by contacting my Ambassador.

I was able to convert an 830T to a QP99 today by calling the Ambassador line. The agent canceled the 830T, credited the 45K points, removed 165K points, and issued a QP99 with an extension date of a year from now. The agent had never done one of these before and seemed to know very little about it but she contacted her support desk and it all went rather smoothly.

Do you mean you converted an OC1-5 certificate to an NC6 certificate?
That sounds quite surreal.

What happens if you cancel a 7 night hotel award which has a travel package attached to it? Does it go back to your account or do you loose it?

I have several counter data points from my friends that it is possible to attach TP certs to pre-devaluation reservations.
