Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Hi everyone - it's been a while since I've been on FT. I tried reading through here best I can but can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for.

I have a 7 night (cat 6) cert that is expiring 9/30. I don't have any 7 night trips planned and realized I may need to convert or try to extend it. I do, however, have a 5-night stay at a Cat 6 in Hawaii in August currently for 200k points.

My question is, can I use my 7-night cert for a 5 night stay? I already checked and the place is available via points. Would I just call and tell them I want to book for 5 nights but to see if they can use that cert, or just book for 7 nights and leave early?

If the hotel is available for 7 nights, I would book it for all 7. If you want a late checkout, need to stay an extra day longer due to a flight cancellation or a couple of nights short of Ambassador status, you might appreciate an additional night or two.

If there are only 5 nights available, one should be able to use your certificate. Lastly, it has been reported here that certificates can be extended for another year.

Appreciate it, rny321. I think i'm going to try to extend but I'm okay with the 7-night stay as the backup!

Just want to update everyone and provide another DP.

I called last night to the UK line and was succesful in converting to QP91 from 870T.

My procedure was
  • I called, asked them if they could help me with my 7 night cert.
  • I asked them to tell me what type of cert I had (870T).
  • I told them I wanted to convert from 870T to QP91.
  • The rep went on hold and asked someone else, then came back and said I didn't have enough points for QP91
  • I told him I should have enough points if they cancel the 870T then order the QP91
  • I was a bit worried as this guy did not seem too confident in the process frankly
  • He then told me he already cancelled the 870T and was having trouble booking the QP91
  • After a few minutes he put me on hold and tried again and was able to get it
  • I confirmed I had it in my account and got emails from Bonvoy right after
Anyways, thanks everyone for the great advice. I'll use up all my Bonvoy points with 7 nights at JW Marriott Phu Quoc and that's fine by me.

Bonvoyed by Marriott for a 7night pakage at Koloa Landing

On 7/2018 I booked 7 nights at Koloa landing in Kauai which was a category 8 at that time for 360k points (60K/night for 6 nights plus 1 free night). Couple of days ago, the hotel cancelled my reservation saying I have insufficient points. I reached out to U.S. Marriott several times (so far 9 times) and the reps have opened 3 cases without any resolution.

I reached out to Marriott Bonvoy Assist twitter team and they are pointing me back to the CSR route. I even spoke to Ambassador desk who had no clue about this whole program. My reservation is on June 7, so I am running against the time now. I'd originally booked the 'Hotel + Plus Air Package 1' for 7 nights @ Category 8 Hotel + 120K Avios for 360K points.

If I convert the old certificate into a new one what will be the code? Will I be able to book the same hotel with the new certificate since points required went up under the new system?

Your responses are highly appreciated.

Update: UK CSR resolved it for me. She attached the correct (new) certificate vs US reps who kept attaching the old certificate.

I have to say this is ridiculous behavior by Marriott.

You may want to reach out directly to the property and see if you can contact the general manager. Explain your case and ask him to see what can be done to help.

Did you attach the certificate to the reservation, or was it a points advance reservation for the past 11 months? If the latter, why did you not attach the certificate?

Yes, Bonvoy certainly has been a big disappointment. I think they'd be better off going back to either Marriott Rewards or SPG. Either was superior to what we have now, IMHO.

I have my final Travel Package stay coming up in July.

Hey ladies and gents.

I’ve got a legacy 530T which expires last week of June. Looking st converting and then booking a stay for late July with the new cert. perhaps you can confirm my plan of action.

1) Call in and “convert” my 530T to a QP53
2) Ask to speak to a CEC agent if things don’t go to plan
3) New cert should hopefully come with a new expiration date a year from the date of conversion.
4) Book 5N stay for July
5) Attach my new QP53 to it.

Did I miss anything?

Many thanks for all your help so far!

I haven't seen any reports of people converting a 5 night OC6 and getting any points back. Should there not be a refund of the difference between OC5 and OC6 when converting to the new certificate, similar to the 7 night version?

stay through unless this is an old package, then you might get it extended but be ready to take a downgrade to cat 1-4

7 Night Cert disappeared from my account

This can be interesting, I found out that my 7-night OC5 expiring Aug 2019 disappeared. Called Marriott, very nice agent, Jackie, put me on hold 20 minutes, came back apologizing not sure how it happened. She said a special case is open, hopefully it will be released back to me in 5 days. I had 2 separate free-nights stays at DC in mid April for 35000 pt / night, which I used two annual free nights cert for the two stays. It seems like that DC hotel attached my 7-night cert on 4/28 (after my stays) for nothing.

This raises some very interesting questions:

1) Can a hotel randomly use 7-night-cert without owner's awareness?

2) the DC hotel is 35000/night, I assume my category OC5 won't even allow it to attach to the hotel of that category, right? Or maybe it does, this OC5 can be attached to a 35000/night hotel going forward?

I asked Jackie this is very scary to have a cert hanging around, can I convert the OC5 to points? She said, you would loose a lot, you will only get back 5000pts.

Once I get the OC5 cert back, I will need to convert to NC4 by Mid August. Mine was Alaska TP. Is there a code for my old OC5 to feed (UK) agent when asking for conversion?

Jackie said that there has been some weird things she has seen lately. Yeah, I mentioned to her that my SO got double charged earlier this year, the only way the hotel can find any thing is by us providing the charge and our credit card #, there was absolutely no paper-trail otherwise they can find anything. Again, scary, we happen to caught the charge, else, we may never know for the few hunderd bucks gone

It is not a downgrade - the old category 5 is the same cost as the new category 4, at 25K a night.

So my old category 1-5 now only works for category 1-4 hotels?
