The Las Vegas South properties are going to be quite a ways from the strip.
Personally, I'd go with the Renaissance. I've stayed there many times (I avoid the strip when in Vegas on business, and my events are usually at the LV Convention Center which is right next door to the Renaissance, which is majorly convenient for me).
The Renaissance is about a 4-minute walk to the monorail station, and is about an 8-minute cab ride to the heart of the strip (Caesar's, Bellagio, Harrah's, Paris) and even shorter to the Venetian.
The rooms are nice. I haven't seen the lounge yet, since I haven't stayed since I've become Gold recently...But the Envy Steakhouse on-property is pretty darned good.
If not, there are other properties in the vicinity of the Convention Center--check out the Residence Inn and CY Convention Center as well.

If this is your first time to Las Vegas, I would recommend you stay on the strip. While you might save money using points of the strip, the cost of cabs, etc can be significant. Outside of money, staying on the strip would provide you a "real" Vegas experience that you wouldn't want to miss as a first timer.
Cheers.

Stay at the Cosmopolitan!!
1. When visiting Las Vegas (especially for the first time) you really have to be on the strip to enjoy it (unless you are there for business).
2. Most Marriott properties are not as close to the strip.
3. The Cosmopolitan is a great resort and offers great Platinum benefits (Wicked Spoon Buffet for 2).

Stayed at residence inn Hughes center and residence inn south just a few weeks ago.
South all the way.
Staying on the strip is a lot more expensive, smokey, loud.
Rsidence inn south has a free shuttle to strip every 30 mins. Clean, newer, great pool, awesome free breakfast. Very friendly.

Like others, I'd recommend staying on the strip for a first time experience. ^
Odd that the RI south offers a shuttle to the strip, but not Hughes Center. Both websites say no shuttle service, but I guess they mean the airport.
I think people that go to LAS on a regular basis tend to ease into one area they like and stay there. For me, that's around Paradise and Flamingo, east of the strip. There's some nice restaurant options, Terrible's Casino has some good player's club promotions (although the joint is getting tired looking these days), and the Hard Rock is just a few blocks south. I've walked to the strip from Hughes Center, though I wouldn't recommend doing that during the day this time of year.
Last time I was in LAS I stayed at the Embassy Suites across from the Hard Rock, but as I'm shifting my stays to MR properties, I'd choose the RI Hughes Center.

I wouldn't even drop points at Cosmo. It's a very high category hotel in a city that doesn't have really high room rates for a nice room. IMHO, much better of paying for a room at say Aria if you want something pretty nice. If you want to save a bit, consider The Mirage.

I am staying at the Residence Inn Hughes Center. It's a cat 4 and i had a cat 1-4 cert so thats why I'm staying here. Cons: The hotel is old and tired and needs better maintenance and updating. There is no free airport shuttle. Pros: it's only 4 blocks to the strip and easy to walk. This also means your taxi fare is reasonable as the strip is not far from to the airport. Also it is on restaurant row so you have tons of eating options right out the front door of the hotel.
The location is great if you don't mind walking a few blocks.
