FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: CWAL
A new thread was created for the new year in 2017. This is the old thread. For the 2017 on this topic, go here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/manufactured-spending/1819562-cvs-master-thread-2017-a.html

CVS is cash only for all Incomm-related reloads and reloadable cards, including Vanilla Reloads and Serve swipe reloads. See memo to stores for complete list. Other cards at CVS can still be bought using credit, but YMMV depending on location, Manager, etc.

New limits rolling out starting 10/20:
Transactions with $300 or more of card face value require ID.
Limit $2000 of card face value per 24 hour rolling period.
Limit of 10 cards per 24 hours.
Cashback posted in 48 hours.

Cash Register Freezing
Multiple reports that the CVS cash register will freeze and lock after scanning the ID when purchasing multiple prepaid cards. Then the register's computer needs to be restarted. Some report that "swiping" the ID instead of "scanning" will avoid the issue.

Limit of 7 tenders (swipes) per transaction. This is most commonly run into when using low-value AGCs. After seven, the transaction must be complete, no cash (or any other payment method) will be accepted to pay the balance.

believe it or not, in a way Buffet is an MSer, the most refined kind and the heaviest of hitters... cause he, by and large, makes his money from arbitrage.

That's not to say that AMEX wouldn't (very strongly) suspect you bought a gift card, but they treat it just like any other purchase.
Partly correct. Amex will not charge a CA fee, however they can see exacty what you bought at many stores...including CVS.

Sorry to take this thread off the rails but I have an actual question - anyone in the S. FL area, who had a previously locked down CVS, seen any recent changes in their ability to buy cards?

Yes I was able too with no problems. Even went back with my wife & had her do the same thing. Have not tried to reload it yet, just got it there and loaded $500 as did my wife.

I see. Well the temp Serve card is just whatever but really what matters is to be able to reload the permanent Serve card with CC.

Once my card gets here, I will go to CVS and try and load it.

Are you saying it's worth another shot? Anything specific?

Yes, the CVSs are jumpy because of recent south Florida fraud involving fake IDs and cards buying large amounts of GCs. One response has been to limit hours of GC sale, but clerks are all confused as to purchase limits. Each store and each clerk seems to have a different interpretation of what is allowed. Can't speak to Serve as I don't use it.

I think the fee waiver is over at CVS. Bought Amex VL GC today and was charged $5.95 fee.

If by VL you mean variable, then yeah cause the fee waiver is/was only the fixed amount cards. I believe upto $100.

No....that is not true at all. I bought VL AGCs last week with zero fees. I even had the cashier verify it since he didn't believe that I didn't have to pay the activation fees. Its not restricted to fixed value AGCs.
