Another similar transaction had the same results. Even with my ID I wasn't able to do multiple even after providing my ID.

I'd say there's about a 95% chance the cashiers are screwing something up.

BUT, I have one CVS that has the the same issue. They ring up one, try to do the second (any amount, total of the 2 VR's below $1k) and their system freezes. I thought this wasn't real until one of the cashiers I've been buying from successfully (over $1k) for a year showed me the screen. I have no idea what this issue is - bad software install, broken scanner, who knows. I don't use this CVS much anymore.

To clarify, what do you mean that he "swiped it"? I am picturing him running it through the mag stripe reader. My state's driver's licenses have a barcode on the back and they scan them the same way they scan merchandise. Sorry to nitpick if I misinterpreted that or if it works differently in other places.

Worryingly at my CVS today, not only were there no VRs, but there were no empty arms in the case. My optimistic interpretation is they have surplus other products (Netspend and My Vanilla today) that they can use to fill up once they're out. My pessimistic interpretation is, well, much more pessimistic.

I'm not the person you're addressing, but I've had cashiers who've swiped and cashiers who've scanned. Individuals in each group have told me they adopted their method because the other method is more prone to freezing up.

There's no way they're losing money on these, otherwise they'd stop selling them since this is a no-profit item. Most likely the CC swipe fee gets passed on to the issuer of the cards, and/or is smaller than usual.

Maybe there's gold in them thar beans for CVS after all...:D
CVS just announced record profits for 2013:
"President and Chief Executive Officer Larry Merlo said, `I am very pleased with our fourth quarter results, which came in at the high end of our expectations and helped produce a record year. '"

Ok, so that may just be a regional difference. There is nothing on my driver's license that could be swiped through the card reader, so I didn't know if that was the problem RedTeam10 was having.

I casually watch him, he goes over the GC rack, and looks where the beans are, and you can tell he was shocked none there. He gets on the phone shortly and gets off, and as he walks past, I say, "Looking for these?" holding the 6 beans.. he stops and says YES!!!... He says I guess I have competition now... We laughed, he is on FT but not very often, he has seen my handle, we chatted for a bit and he left. First time for me to meet another MSer at CVS.. BTW, my Citi Exc card had a fraud alert placed on it for that purchased, 45 second on the phone cleared it up...

You will never know who you will meet on a bean run...

Thats hilarious. Im in San Diego as well and bumped into someone looking for vanilla beans. I was at point loma and saw some hidden Beans but didnt reach for them as I saw someone next to me on a mission looking for them and just left. After he left, I dug out the hidden beans and made my purchase :).
I hope we are not competing. I have a lot of MSing to do this year.

This has been talked about in this thread, so anytime a purchase is over 1K, the clerk needs to swipe your DL, some clerks get this perplex look on their face, and I hand them my DL and tell them the system is asking them to scan/swipe my DL, they do it and the light blub goes off, and the clerk can continue with the transactions.

I've had to train many newbies at the CVS affiliate on the Island. They often panic and in the frenzy try to scan the same card over and over again. It would be so awesome if we could ring ourselves out on the self checkout that I have seen in some stores.

Not true in my neck of the woods.

I purchased 2 VRs at 499.75 each today using a credit card. (Remember that the 3.95 fee does not count towards the 1000 "gotta scan your DL" limit). My DL was not scanned.

I would think you could also do 500 on the first card and then 499 + change on the second card. As long as the total loaded onto the cards is under 1K, the cashier is not asking for my DL. And that is what I prefer. After the Target fiasco, the fewer the number of retailers who have my info in their system the better I feel. (There is of course a downside to this approach. I have 2 BB accounts (one for me, one for wife). So this can mean up to 10 CVS visits per month. I'm fortunate that I've got a CVS that is only a few blocks from work.)

Stay out of my area. =P

Central jersey between Monmouth and Mercer, if anyone want to chat, let me know, have not had issues finding vr here.

So why is it when I'm in Chitown I can buy 20-25K of VR? Your right, I'll keep the CVS that have no problem buying to myself.... Forget that I ever said anything...

LOL, that happened to me Monday, I had my DL out, and she looked at me, and I explained, just scan my ID.. After 15 second, a smile came to her face and I bought 3K worth.

Sounds like the Fabbricato Trascorrere families and related banksters need to get together and hold a meeting to carve out our territories. Would hate to see a repeat of the St. Valentines Day Massacre because someone was caught poaching in the wrong place, capiche?:p

Stay in NJ, and we'll stay in PA. :D
