I've read various answers to this question over the last 24 hours, so wanted clarification from people who have done it if possible.
My first card is "active with restrictions" per conversation with MVD customer service. I can't login. I have $2,000 remaining. They said I cannot CA the remaining balance, but can use credit or debit. I plan on buying a MO at WM, and was wondering if I can do one large transaction ($1,998.60 + $1.40 MO fee for two 1K MOs) or do I have to do less than $800? Thanks |

They told me that I couldn't do a CA either after being put in spend down, but I was able to do it. This was the case with a prior card that got shutdown as well. I think people have had the same experience. You should be able to do the MO in one large transaction.

New data point for me:
On two separate occasions at different Wal-Marts, employees told me that I couldn't buy MO's with a temporary MVD card. Surprisingly though, once I waited for and got the permanent card, I went to the same location of my first rejection and the lady didn't even ask me to see the card when I requested $2900 in MO's. She just told me to swipe. I guess YMMV, but it seems like Wal-Mart might be cracking down... |
I can no longer login to my mvd account today. It says invalid user name and password. Is that a shutdown or a paydown? I am still able to use it as credit card. Not sure if debit transaction with pin will still work. CA certainly is not working for me. When I tried it today (2.5K) it kept on asking the teller to try again.

Card Status - Inactive
Is that spend down mode? I can still log in to my account. Haven't tried to make a charge yet though. |

Could mean your permanent card has been mailed if you bought a temp card in store, referring to the permanent card as being inactive. Check the last four numbers of the card listed online vs. your temporary card.

Not a good idea IMO

You can take out the whole balance, no need to leave the $1.95 fee. I've done it before. Your account will then show a negative balance of $1.95. Two bucks is not a big deal, but it feels good to stick it to 'em.

Bought MVD #1 last Thursday, loaded with $2,500, cashed out $3,000 in MO that night
Loaded another $2,500 this Monday, went to inactive (cashed out at bank) Bought MVD #2 last Friday, loaded with $2,500, cashed out $2,500 that afternoon as a CA Loaded another $2,500 this Monday, cased out $3,000 in MO Monday night Inactive on Tuesday So, now I can get a third card correct? And then keep getting cards once I'm shut down? Not that big of a deal, and I don't mind buying the MVDs, since I can add another $500. The only problem is I will run out of usernames that I'll be able to remember! |
Consistently getting about $7500 loaded and unloaded on to these MVD cards before I'm put in spend down mode. Guess that's as good as it gets... luckily I have quite a few family members and access to their SSN's and information.
Just to confirm, once you have three under your SSN, you can't apply for new cards, right? |
My first card was put in spend down mode. I shouldn't have lost it...

I tried to register a couple of temporary cards for my parents (with full permission), but got hit with the "contact customer service" message. This is after registering their first cards successfully a couple of days before, and the previous temp cards are still in active mode. Trying to start the registration process from scratch with the debit card number results in "Error occurred. Please try again later."
Anyone else experienced this? I'll probably call in eventually or have my parents each call in to activate the cards but want to know what to expect so I can avoid shutdowns. |
On the thread wiki I see-
"Get new cards, spend some random amount and then get put in shutdown mode to spend off what is left, unless you utilize one old weird trick that prevents shutdown mode" what is that "one old weird trick"? Can anyone provide details? |
