PLEASE READ FIRST: WELCOME and MODERATOR NOTE

Welcome to the MH370 Discussion and Speculation Thread

If you are new to us, welcome to FlyerTalk!
Who we are: FlyerTalk features discussions and chat boards that covers the most up-to-date traveler information; an interactive community dedicated to the topic of travel.

All travelers are welcome in the community. Just choose a forum: conversing about airlines and their programs, airports, destinations, dining and how to make the most of your miles and points, or visit our Information Desk to start.
We do have some Rules, and everyone agrees to abide by these when they are granted free membership privileges. On a topic that generates a lot of feelings and perspectives, perhaps the most useful one is:

Respect our Diversity - link to this guideline

FlyerTalk members come from all walks of life and all parts of the world. We are as diverse in our makeup as we are alike in our passion for frequent flyer programs. Because we all bring a unique perspective to the forum, our collective experience is broadened, and we gain new insights.

Our diversity demands that we respect each other. Due to the inherent constraints of the Internet, humor, sarcasm, language and slang can be easily misinterpreted - especially when crossing cultural boundaries.

When posting a message, pay extra care to how it might be interpreted. And when you come across a post that offends you, read it with an eye toward giving the poster the benefit of the doubt.

If you have an issue with a post, please contact the member privately or contact a moderator (click on the button). Do not make a situation worse by publicly responding.
MORE about the MH370 Discussion and Speculation Thread

In order to a) keep the original thread focused on confirmed news and known facts, and b) allow folks a place to discuss their ideas about what might have happened, the MH370 moderators and Community Director have decided to open this thread.

Here are the expectations:

1. The normal FT TOS apply. (Including not discussing moderation actions on-thread). And please be particularly attentive to "discussing the idea and not the poster" when you have a disagreement. Civility and mutual respect are still expected and are what we owe each other as a community.

2. You are expected respect our diversity , and therefore refrain from posting inflammatory comments about race, religion, culture, politics, ethnicity, orientation, etc." Do not cite, copy, or report on such.

3. Please do continue to be attentive to the sensibilities of the families of those on the flight. Think about if you were them what you would and would not want to see posted. Speculation about what happened is permissible; please, though, do not indulge in inflammatory or overly-lurid descriptions that could well be hurtful.

4. Overly / extravagantly exaggerative posts such as conspiracy theories, posts beyond the realm of science and known facts, etc. as well as posts with information that has been posted several times previously, information that has been posted in the News thread wiki or FAQ, may be deleted.
E.g. the aircraft was vaporized.

In terms of housekeeping, posts may get moved from the "news" thread if and as needed, and posts that do not conform to these simple expectations, above, will be deleted.

Also note: this wiki is locked; changes can only be made by moderators.

Thank you.

Those same materials are what you end up with when you scrap ships... so, IMHO, it is not a credible lead.
Whats interesting though is they say that wasn't there 8 weeks or so ago, so maybe a new ship destroyed or something?

Accordingly, looks like it is officially debunked

Was listening to CNN on the way to work (XM Radio) and they said that this plane had 5,000 pounds (I think thats right) of lithium batteries in the cargo hold, that seems like a lot- evidently full cargo manifest was released today

14.08 A full list of the cargo has been released, which includes the four tonnes of mangosteens that had previously sparked an investigation. Also featured is lithium batteries, which Malaysia Airlines only admitted to carrying two weeks after the plane disappeared and after having denied it.

Lithium-ion batteries - which are used in mobile phones and laptops - have been responsible for a number of fires on planes and have even brought aircraft down in recent years.

If the Lithium batteries started a fire, I doubt there would be no communication from the Pilot, and 6 hours more of flying before the plane went down. Also, swerving around countries as well doesn't seem like something a fire would cause.

True you have a point just find it unusual they did not release this earlier

"
Missing Jet Recordings May Have Been 'Edited': Experts

By Elizabeth Chuck

Audio recordings of the final conversations between pilots of the missing Malaysian jet and teams of air traffic controllers on the ground were "edited" before they were made public, voice experts say.

The tapes also appear to be recorded by at least two different audio sources, one of which may have been a digital recorder held up to a speaker, they said."
Here is the recordings that were released

It wasn't 5000 pounds of batteries - it was 5000 pounds of electronics (walkie-talkies I believe) that contained lithium batteries. Because of the batteries the shipment had to be specially listed.

"Eleven terrorists with links to Al Qaeda have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the disappearance of MH370

A group of 11 terrorists with links to Al Qaeda were yesterday being interrogated on whether they are behind the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

The suspects were arrested in the capital Kuala Lumpur and in the state of Kedah last week and are members of a violent new terror group said to be planning bomb attacks in Muslim countries.

The interrogations come after international investigators, including the FBI and MI6, asked for the militants, whose ages range from 22 to 55 and include students, odd-job workers, a young widow and business professionals, to be questioned intensively about Flight MH370. "

You might also want to add that since GeoResonance last surveyed the area on 5th March a Ballistic missile test fired from Chandipur impacted the sea at the same location and they have both Aluminium and Titanium.

More "aviation experts" weigh into the debate:

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/la...rence/?cmp=ydn

A senior Boeing 777 captain and a former crash investigator agreed that given the information outlined in the preliminary report issued late last week, "human input was essential" for the MH370 to end its flight in the Indian Ocean.
What....no names of these so called "experts"??

Early on we were all led to believe there was no distress call from MH370 however a Chinese news agency China Times refers to a distress call being picked up by VTBU Rayong in Thailand. This is the text translated with Google Translate:

....In addition, the U.S. Embassy said the 2:43 U.S. military bases stationed in Thailand U-Tapao SOS signal was listening to some of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 emergency call, said the aircraft cabin facing disintegration driver call, they want a forced landing . U.S. troops are currently stationed in Thailand, Malaysia has been providing this signal.

It is hard to grasp why this was not mentioned in the report of 1st May?

How can anyone solve a jig saw puzzle when half the pieces are hidden?

I'm sorry if this has already been covered on this forum. I am rather confused by the fact that a couple of weeks ago it was thought that the signals from the black box were being picked up and it was stated that theses signals could not have been from anything else. I also understand that the signal from the BB could only travel about 3km. Now we are told that "it is back to square one". If the signals were being picked up surely the plane is within 3km of where the ship was that picked up the signal and it should be "nearby". Have I missed the news item saying these were not the signals from the BB?
