To me it looks like they issue new tickets in batches but app and other sources would indicate the successful upgrade earlier when the actual decision has been done.

No ticket yet, so remains to be seen what is the outcome. The bad part in this limbo is that I can't naturally change the assigned seats as from MMB pov, the booking is still in waitlist-phase. If no tickets come during monday, need to call CS.

Typically in these cases I have been able to use the chat function and get the new seat. And most of the time, the new ticket arrives the same day so you might be okay later today.

Just booked few good deals with AY multi-city.

I wanted to book:

LHR-HEL (overnight) / HEL-TKU-MHQ / VBY-HEL / HEL-LHR (3 days later)

or

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b3b4b367a3.jpg

and book VBY-HEL separetly

----

Problems I encountered:
  • overnight in HEL on the outbound was not displayed as option (even though it is on ITA matrix for example) and forced the whole trip on a day later without the overnight. Solution: Add separate flights for LHR-HEL and HEL-MHQ
  • I want a long layover in TKU to get more miles as these are 2 flight numbers rather than 1 flight number with the quick stop (I credit to BA). This option can't be selected (see printscreen below)
  • for the HEL-LHR segment 3 days after VBY-HEL, an error occured (see printscreen)
  • for the HEL-LHR segment at the end without the VBY-HEL segment, no flights on my preferred date (19.7.20) were shown (see printscreen)

The AY website makes a lot of assumptions, many of which are true for most travellers (like not offering to stop over in TKU when there's a "direct" flight). But if you wish to do something out of the ordinary, the website will fail. A very simple AAA-HEL-BBB-HEL-AAA with one stopover in HEL should work relatively well, but anything else is, in general, too complicated. Even two stopovers in HEL in the itinerary above might not work.

And any stopover screws it up also if your flights are to/from destinations with multiple flights a day. The multicity tool is programmed to show only a few (4 or 6 or something) options per flight, and since there's no way to tell the tool what time of day you need to fly, it will automatically list the first flights of the day. If you need a late flight, you have to call.

But Florens, AY phone agents are pretty good and they do waive the phone fee after checking that your itinrerary isn't available online. So if you want to avoid OTAs, just call AY and feed Janica the flights you want.

Note that ITA Matrix doesn't have real-time availability so the prices you get there might not be the same that AY are quoting.

Even simple EUR-HEL-EUR might not work with some city pairs. I could see availability (revenue) for DUS-HEL and for HEL-WAW (for €€€€), but DUS-HEL-WAW just came back with no availability. Well, sorry AY, my loyalty is limited, LO takes me there non-stop for 110€.

In other cases, it works like a miracle. Same travel, need to get home from WAW - WAW-HEL on AY one-way is 500+€ - adding a HEL-CPH leg 6 months out the price dropped to 149€ :) Best of all - I actually need the CPH flight ^

Which is one of the anomalies in itself. CPH-WAW is not bookable, while WAW-CPH is.

Called CS, upgrade was confirmed but needed some manual step to ticket. Sounds odd, likely batch run would have sorted this out after a while. The upgrade was cleared likely around T-30 but can not be sure as I just happened to look in the App. Also, quite curious that App is connected to some other back-end system than MMB. Or to a "preliminay" table in some DB, good question is that in case of discrepancy, which is "truth". I.e. could the confirmed upgrade actually become uncomfirmed at this final stage or issuing new ticket in case loads have changed suddenly.

Thanks for this, it made me think.
so the best way is actually to start with a good OTA tool and once suitable combo found, just call AY to book and say their booking engine cannot handle the booking so to waive the call fee. If Janica then says it is bookable online, only then go to the sad multicity tool. Not doing the multicity tool from beginning to save time and nerves.

Just managed to log in (only a few errors before successful) and I was teleported to 2009!
(and for those of you not members long enough - the blue and grey arcs are part of the card design of days looong gone...)
Sadly I've been demoted to "Standard" tier ?!

Took me 4 tries this morning and got the same menu demoting my status. Did I mention it's frustrating as hell?

AY's lowest price option exARN takes a while to understand.

Have you tried choosing the inbound? Maybe there is something hidden in fare combination rules and the cheaper fares in the top can not be booked with some other cheap fares? Or then just IT error :)
