As we come to the end of the calendar year, well be sending out emails this week to tell you about some upcoming changes to the SkyMiles program many of which will begin at the start of the new Medallion program year on March 1, 2014.
Changes to Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs):
We are always looking for opportunities to fine-tune the Medallion program and weve received a lot of valuable feedback about the SWUs component of our Medallion benefits.
On March 1, 2014, were replacing SWUs with two new certificate types: Global Upgrades and Regional Upgrades. Global Upgrades will be available on all routes and Regional Upgrades will be available on the same routes as Medallion Complimentary Upgrades, but have a higher priority.
Both Global and Regional Upgrades will be valid on Delta flights for all paid Economy class fares except for E, providing you even more options and convenience.
The current SWUs will still be available as Choice Benefits selections through February 28, 2014 and all the terms and conditions of the existing certificates continue to apply.
Added Choice Benefits:
There will also be two new Choice Benefits options available for selection beginning March 1, 2014:
Global Entry application vouchers Diamond Medallion members can select 2 and Platinum Medallion members can select one
Tiffany & Co. Diamond Medallion premium luggage tags (2 for Diamond Medallions only)
Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades:
Starting with the new Medallion program year on March 1, 2014, Medallion members will enjoy Complimentary Upgrades on flights between Hawaii and Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, or Seattle. However, in light of significant investments in our coast-to-coast BusinessElite experience - including premium amenities like fully flat-bed seats, Westin Heavenly In-Flight Bedding, on-demand entertainment, and premium dining - we will no longer offer Medallion Complimentary Upgrades on flights between New York-JFK and Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle beginning March 1, 2014.
More information about the program changes for the 2014 Medallion year are available on the SkyMiles News and Updates section of delta.com. Well be following your comments here and look forward to reading your feedback.

Upgrades on international flights are into BE seats that would otherwise remain empty.
A PM getting an upgrade with an RU just means that someone who would have been higher on the list didn't get it.
At least with SWUs, a PM using one (possibly) had to pay more.

As someone that flies JFK-SFO frequently, the new changes are insanely aggravating. But having flown paid first on a few other airlines since the announcement, DL's overall product remains hard to beat. Was really looking for reasons to like the other products... just not feeling it. Which leaves me feeling stuck and bitter about my transcons still.

Serious question - If you've flown paid first several times in the past nine days (on other airlines) since the announcement, why wouldn't you just buy paid BE on Delta? Unless you mean paid first on non-transcon routes, which are usually less expensive than the transcons. Just curious.
Mixed up my fight schedules this past week to fly some paid first products, and have tried AA and UA transcons now all in the last quarter. Work won't expense paid F, but will expense M fares.
Probably the most bothersome has been the UA Zone 1 problem - it's like the SkyPriority issue flying DL out of ATL. If everyone has it, you probably need a better way to segment boarding.
Seems everyone's bent on diluting benefits rather than raising the difficulty. Kill rollovers and make earning miles-based DM as difficult to earn as segment-based DM. I have a ton of respect for anyone that earns DM flying segments only... I couldn't do it, but they deserve the nicer benefits.

I got to fly DL F as I was relegated to DL but booked with a Medallion on the same PNR.

Why any company would pay for YBM fares is beyond me. DL was basically scamming the system by creating an incentive for employees to book over-priced fares in order to use their SWUs. This wasted company money and created a system where there were no international UG benefits for people working for companies with rationale travel policies or those who were weren't profligate or irresponsible with their employer's money.

That's somewhat the point of MQD. Seems like there's a fair number of marginal FOs/GMs who won't be "hogging" the EC seats.

I wonder whether DL has been getting some complaints from major corporate contract potential customers about issues with DL incentivizing employees to purchase tickets that are more expensive than necessary in order to be eligible for upgrades.

Not sure why employers would complain to DL about that. Seems like that's on the company to set and enforce the policy. My employer is wise to the practice and specifically disallows up-faring to improve upgrade eligibility/chances.

My former employer utilized software that alerted managers to any purchase of a ticket costing $100 more than the lowest available fare. In some cases, such purchases could be reasonably explained. But if not, employees could find themselves footing the bill or just in hot water. It got ugly sometimes.
