I don't know fuel dumps and I am still hesitant to book mistakes or cheap trips on third-party sites. But I can plug an existing deal into ITA and make it and several variants of it show up, and I have no trouble searching for MR-worthy (based on CPM) same day turns to the West Coast.

Make a list of possible alternate flights (use SeatCounter or KVS), and have them handy if things go FUBAR. It's much easier to get results from some help desk drone if you can just feed them segments, rather than give them the option of telling you you're screwed until next February, and would you prefer to take Greyhound?
