Back on US soil, waiting for our MEM-ATL flight. We had a fabulous trip, but it was far too short. We'll definitely be going back to Amsterdam as we could have used several more days there to see everything.
Today's AMS-MEM flight was nice, but honestly, I found BusinessElite rather underwhelming. The food was OK, but not as good as CO's, and CO's presentation of it is a million times nicer than DL's. The whole galley cart in the aisle, pouring soup from a thermos in the aisle, serving a soup, appetizer, and salad all on a tray and pulling off the plastic wrap as it is placed on your tray table thing is rather unprofessional for international C. I don't even like seeing that stuff in domestic F, but for long-haul international premium service, it's just cheap and unprofessional. My impression of DL still remains that they try way too hard to be stylish and trendy and come off looking tacky and cheap instead (example — glossy menus that are way over-designed and go out of their way to promote Michelle Bernstein and provide long welcoming letters from DL and Michelle, yet look like something more appropriate for a Denny's than a nice restaurant). The flight was full in Y but only had 12 passengers in BusinessElite. Service from the purser was great, and the other flight attendant working with her up front was fine, although he got rather snippy with us when we asked for a Diet Coke as the pre-departure drink, and all they were serving was orange juice, champagne, water, or one kind of beer — not even coffee, until the purser changed her mind and decided to make some. Huh? This was 45 minutes before push, and it's a freaking international flight, in your premium class, and you can't open a damn soft drink? I just don't get it. Meal service was very slow, despite the small number of passengers, but after that, the purser made sure we always had drinks and was close at hand if we needed anything. She really was great, and we got the impression from talking with her that she mainly works that flight a couple of times a week.
DL has continued to irritate me with its horrible handling of codeshare itineraries post-merger. We had major difficulty checking in at ATL last week, and this morning it took the KLM agent in AMS about 20 minutes to get my boarding pass because DL had screwed up the reservation so badly with multiple schedule and flight number changes. She wasn't able to give us boarding passes for MEM-ATL, and it took the agent here at the MEM SkyClub about 15 minutes of work to get those boarding passes to print. This is the fourth itinerary I've had this year involving a mix of DL/NW flights, and every one of them has had this problem. I think I've now spent about two hours cumulative waiting for an agent to get a boarding pass because of this nonsense. It certainly just adds to my list of reasons to avoid giving DL any of my business unless I absolutely have no other option.
Anyway, it was a great trip. I'm ready to be home, and after an hour-long crappy flight on an ASA CR9, we should be there.
