Well, CM is partially right as I believe the failure of said deal will cause US some challenges.
But, the real reason is I don't trust Delta. Over the years DL has entered many markets and left many markets when they couldn't dominate. They give up easily and have no long term commitment to anything other than ATL (a prime example is LAX which has been hubbed and dehubbed more than I can count).
Furthermore, if the slots were to be sold/traded on the open market, US would likely to be able to gain more. Additionally, allowing the slot swap to happens reduces a major player in the NYC market, which from a competition standpoint, is bad. Lastly, the last thing the NYC area needs is more freaking CRJs and that is exactly what DL will fill the void with.
