How proper is it to be fairly firm in a request for business class for a longer term engagement? I would fly NZ for ~$8k r/t which I think is reasonable. I could do SQ for $13k but that may be pushing it.

I mean, it's good for me professionally, but - uhm. I don't want to say anything more in a public forum. Plus, it's more work. So, less PB.

At least they're letting me see the project I'm working on through. I can't believe it was a point of leveraged negotiation to do more work.

Does your company have predefined travel rules? If no, then request away. If yes, then it doesn't hurt to ask.

I think it's fairly reasonable in cases where your employer is proposing sending you halfway round the world. If long-haul travel is going to become a regular staple of your working life, I would think it best to try for biz from the get-go. Once they know you'll sit in Y for 19+ hours and live with it, you're likely hosed. IIRC, you work in an oil/gas-related business. It's not like you're working for a non-profit or in a financially-distressed industry.

What about QF?

I should also add, that I really am not intending to sound ungrateful, or biting the proverbial hand that feeds me.

I suppose I'm happy for the promotion, and excited to take on this challenge, but I guess I just wanted to see my current job through for another year. I finally got the dept. up and running, I don't want to push my baby out of the nest. That's all it comes down to.

In other news, I could have as many as 2 people beneath me.

The travel rules we have in place are fairly lax. We had a guy miss a flight in MEX because he didn't remember what day he was flying out and we paid $1300 for a o/w to get him home

I've flown J and full Y a couple of times but from what I'm reading in our travel policy, we only fly J if the client pays for it, and we, being great salespeople, don't know how to price travel.

My itinerary is growing to JNB then Australia, back to JNB, back to Australia, then home for a week, and back to JNB.

It's bittersweet. Hopefully it works out for the best. Two people beneath you? You had a meeting with the "Bob's", didn't you!

Thanks for the info sfogate! This could always come in handy when I am stuck somewhere without a PClub.

I've been pretty successful in getting the clients to pay for J going overseas - to Europe, Africa, and Austratlia.

But then again... I work in the pharmaceutical industry, so J is standard for them to fly overseas.

I'm not complaining :)
