I am so exhausted right now that the fatigue is actually making me more alert.

Yes. If you have several days in/around CPT, I would highly recommend the Arabella Western Cape Hotel & Spa over the Westin Grand.

Wonderful input and pictures, as always. Thanks! ^

No - I totally forgot about it like a . I'll have to give it a shot on the next trip. The coolest thing we did was go to the top of Taipei 101. Taipei is a great city, by the way. It turned out to be a lot more interesting than what I originally expected.

Sounds like some serious party potential there!

When are you going again ?

ETA: and I had planned on going to TPE while I was in asia but Typhoon Morokot Re-Timed all the flights

The MH flight was 3 hours and 45 minutes late yesterday.

October. It will be a 772 at that time. That reminds me, I need to reserve seats.

We were offered a buy-up to F on TPE-LAX for $250 each, but then they retracted the offer because it was only valid for tickets issued in Taiwan. On LAX-TPE, they offered a buy-up for $1000 each. At least we got to walk through the F cabin during boarding yesterday.

Good to know. I had never heard much about TPE one way or the other, and as it is not a traditional vacation destination in Asia, I was leery of burning $$$, miles, and/or vacation time to get there (despite being curious to try EVA Air in Elite Class). I will add it to my Asia list.

There was a typhoon plowing through Japan yesterday, and many NRT flights were canceled. Fortunately, it did not affect TPE. MH actually called us to let us know that the flight was going to be delayed due to MX. We almost got them to reroute is in OZ C via ICN, but there was not enough time to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 at TPE and get boarding passes. They would have done it, though, had there been time.

I would try to build it in as a stopover when traveling to someplace like HKG, BKK, KUL, or SIN because it is such a long trip (just south of Shanghai). Three full days is plenty of time to do all the interesting activities; any more time than that probably would be boring. Other than the hotels, it is really inexpensive, as well. We were taking the subway all over for approximately $1/ride, on average, and we took a cab accross town for about $7. $20 will get you a nice dinner with beer at any number of nice restaurants. The bus from the airport directly to the hotel was only $3/person (compared with $16 in NRT).

All in all, it is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't make a special trip there (unless another deal surfaces, of course ;)) - I would just work it in as a stopover when going elsewhere in Asia.

Good to know. I really would like to visit Langkawi, Malaysia next year at some point (hopefully to celebrate passing teh Bar). I may try to build a side-trip to TPE into the itinerary.
