If I could be assured free drinks in the air, I would rather have 12A on an ERJ than a Bulkhead Window F seat on a DL MD-88.

I went to register for the Mileathon and got this message.

Thank you for your interest in Mileathon. However, the credit-earning period for this promotion expired on Dec. 31, 2009. We invite you to find out about other OnePass promotions and offers.
I knew I slept late today but not a whole year's lete.

I have heard other reports (mainly from ssullivan) that US F is just fine. I certainly hope so, as I'll be seeing a lot of it in the next few months.

Well, US F is just fine if you go into it with the right expectations. It's like flying WN or FL; don't expect much and you probably won't be disappointed. US F is definitely ghetto F when it comes to domestic F; you'll get your drink in an oversized plastic cup, no meals, flight attendants give you your drink and then get the heck out of F and back to Y. Seats are the standard domestic F width but have less leg and knee room than any other domestic F I've flown on in the United States, with the exception of the NW DC-9 fleet (it's about the same as those planes).

So, it ain't great, but it ain't horrible either. And it certainly beats flying just about anybody in Y. But don't expect hot towels, decent food, lots of attention from the FAs (they're too busy trying to get people to sign up for credit cards), or real glasses.

I had an pre-refurb US F seat, I think - this was Christmas Day '08 on an A321. Service was inferior to CO too. On CO, the flight would have been timed for breakfast service. On US, it was the communal snack basket.

While F is always better than Y on some level for domestic travel, I don't believe myself to be alone in thinking that US F is at or near the bottom of the barrel.

That good, huh? :) If properly padded, 12A is actually not that bad of a seat, IMO.

The US F seats are fine, but severely lack in the pitch department.

What policies does US follow for meals in F? I have several flights under 3 hours so I won't expect much (or any) food on those but what about a transcon (SFO-CLT)?

I absolutely love the UA F seat. Whoever designed it paid due attention to ergonomics. On me, at least, it conforms perfectly to the contours of my back. CO's two flat slabs of leather intersecting at right-angles leave me with a sore back after several hours in the air, even with the so-called lumbar support (which does little more than poke into my tail-bone).

ETA - DL has the worst F seats of any domestic carrier, IMO. Green Pleather Bricks with terrible padding and back-support. It's no wonder they have AVOD. Without it, you wouldn't be able to take your mind off the terrible seat.

I don't mind the CO F seat all that much, with the exception of the 739-ER. I've never been blown away by it, but I've never found it uncomfortable either.

DL's seats, in both Y and F, are pretty awful. The newer seats, which they made such a big deal about being so comfortable, are worse.

I like the UA F seat a lot too, with one exception. When the headrest is lowered, it's right in the middle of my back and it's super uncomfortable. UA's flight attendants are known to be headrest nazis for takeoff and landing, and if you have that thing up during that time, you'll have a FA hovering over you like a buzzard over fresh road kill. The UA seat needs a higher back so that the headrest is behind your head when lowered, not sticking out behind your shoulders where it's really uncomfortable. Other than that, it's a great seat.

Worst domestic F seat I've ever sat in — NW's CR9 F seat. It's just pure awfulness.

But how is that any different than domestic F on the other US carriers?

Last year I flew domestic F on CO, NW, DL, AA, UA, and US multiple times. Everyone but US was pretty equal in many areas; CO generally had the best food, with AA/NW/UA a tie and DL following behind them. US had no food but drinks (in a plastic cup) and bagged snacks. NW and DL did the best snack only service. UA generally had the best seat, with the exception of the headrest lowered thing. DL excelled when it came to IFE (most of my DL F flights on IFE equipped planes had the AVOD/satellite TV system). US was just a wider seat, slightly more leg room, and all the drinks and snack mix you could consume.

US still offers meals on transcons in F.

Thank you for feeding my laziness... :) I guess I'll only see a meal on 1 of my US flights.

sdm1130 Sep 1, 2009 9:10 am

One thing I'd really like to see CO adopt from DL/NW is the snack basket.
