You'll need the valid out-of-state drivers license (which they will keep) and a piece of secondary photo identification (such as a passport). You'll also need your car registration and proof of insurance paperwork just in case. Fill out the form, they'll do a vision test, thumb print, and picture. Cost is $24, cash or check. No credit/debit accepted for reasons passing my personal understanding. Be prepared to wait a while since Texas DPS doesn't do appointments. Also, since they rolled out the new driver license format and had a computer virus shut down their license manufacturing office, of which there is only one here in Austin, there has been a back log. Normally it takes about four to six weeks to get the actual license, but I was cautioned eight to ten weeks. I got mine in about five weeks. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the advice/warning. I wanted to use my CC (who wouldn't want to earn miles/points?!). I am not liking the fact they don't do appointments. In Broward County, Florida they do appointments. The wait was long, but not as bad as it would be without an appointment.

Also make sure that you have another official ID to travel. I went to get my Tx DL two years ago and after I get through the whole process and the clerk has cut my old license she ask, are you traveling anytime soon. I said yes, tomorrow. I think she pooped in her pants. I said not to worry I have my passport. You would think that would be one of the first things they ask about.

I think I would be kicked out of the 'Box if I didn't have a passport. It's required for membership in the 'Box, no? This piece of paper they hand you is BS. If I didn't have a passport, what would they give me for legit ID for the TSA to see? Is it so hard to manufacture a DL at the DL office?!?:rolleyes:

I just got my passport renewed last month after it had expired 2 years earlier. I did it for two reasons.....my boss told me I may be going to Germany soon and a box cop was giving me  about it (I won't mention any names but he's a moderator and prefers the letters towards the end of the alphabet) :D :p

G'night for real this time.

Happy Birthday FT Lurker!!

Just finished up the morning dives here. I've gotten pretty close to nitrogen overload; these dives are WAY longer than the ones I'm used to.

Hmmm....2am on the East coast and the Box is 37 posts from a round number. But post padding is wrong. :p

I AM HERE. I am cleaning house. I have spotless bathroom. Bleached it all up looking spiffy!

Trying to find better organization in there, for towels and washcloths to not call out of narrow shelves :D

Minor correction. I had too much Oxygen in my system, not nitrogen. Whoopsie.

Indeed, that would be a shame.
