I love PTY and there is so much to do there. The restaurants are great and the people are so nice. I'm going to have to check out the prices for tkts. I always use 35K for Y from EWR as the fares when I go (usually Thanksgiving or January) are arund $570.

Looks like TGU is on sale from Copa. I wonder if a stopover in PTY can also be arranged to also see the canal.

The fact that the TGU airport was closed doesn't seem to matter with regard to them selling the fare, so one can use this to get to SAP instead.

OK, so let's assume that everything on that drive is gone and I now have no pictures, audio or video. The computer on which it did live was bought in 2002. Email and Internet work fine so far as I can tell, but the system is rather long in the tooth. Can anyone say Mac laptop?

If the harddrive is gone, your computer won't even start up. Do you have more than one drives on the computer?

Yes - the dead drive was a secondary whose only role in life was to hold my media. I'm still on the system with the affected drive because the primary is fine, so far as I can tell.

But, this thing is 6 years old and already tempermental. From the time I had the secondary installed, Windows would only recognize it every other time the system rebooted. Today just makes me want to blow it up and start over. I would consider Mac, but they are horribly priced vs. Dell, and Dell is still my first choice brand. There is no doubt that if I do buy new, I'm going laptop...I'll just plug my 21" monitor into the back and use a docking station. Money is tight for me now, and in addition to the expense of new hardware, I have to factor in that all of my music is gone too.

The price difference between Dell and Apple is minimal (non-existant in some cases) if the systems are similarly spec'd out. People think that Apple is so much more expensive only because they don't sell a basic, stripped down $300 POS machine. If you are really interested in a Mac, check out Apple's refurbished items - you can find some great deals in there and they come with the normal Apple warranty. I've heard it is impossible to tell the difference between a new and a refurbished Apple product.

As far as the music is concerned, if purchased through iTunes, you can contact Apple, explain what happened and they will allow you to re-download all of your purchased songs.

Yes! I just read your comment about pricing. Check out the pricing on the refurbished Macbook. We just got one for home use, and I have an NEC 20" widescreen plugged into it. Could not be happier with the machine.

It's not for reinstalling stuff, it is a bunch of tools. The CD boots into Windows PM and there are a bunch of tools there to help with whatever propblems you are having.

I use it most to copy and move files outside of my hard disk bootable windows environment.

I also use it to hack admin passwords (not often mind you...)

Thanks for the tip re: music - that will get back about 15% of my library. I'm trying to see the bright spots where I can. I'm extremely peeved that my photo library now consists of what's on my Photobucket and a few other files that I managed to save.

Do you have your entire music library on your ipod?

I did until it was stolen a few months ago - I very stupidly forgot to lock my car in front of my girlfriend's house and I went out there the next morning to find it gone.

Yikes - I am so sorry :( - is your music anywhere else (grasping at straws here because I've had this happen before)
