Western Europe transit is funded through fares (which rise without an increase in ridership in some cases) and through government $$. At least that's how I understand it.

You should see how much to the MTA bridge and tunnel tolls go to NYCTA.
Western EU is about 80% tax payer. They claim 100% operation cost but that's nothing compared to the cost of equipment and maintaining the system. In the UK, Network Rail is responsible for the infrastructure and Stations (except St. Pancras). In London, TFL is responsible for the rail and station but someone else runs the trains. It's a gian mess to be honest with the government taking over the operation of trains between London and Scottland the other week from National Express.

I've known that for years. The bridges and tunnels are used to fund a whole range of stuff. Robert Moses perfected this kind of scheme a long time ago.

How much does the MTA pay those non-english speaking morons behind the booths at the subway stations? I heard they got paid $20+ an hour but it could have just been a rumor. IMO those people are worthless and it makes me mad when I see them sitting in their booth yelling at people that dont know how to use the card machines. Get out of your effing booth and help them:mad::mad::mad:

The booth people get about $20K a year so it's not any $20/hour. They aren't allowed to leave the booth since it's considered a cash vault and there's a long history of people robbing them. That's part of the reason they've eliminated so many of them. As for the machines, they aren't programmed properly. They are set up to sell anything but a Metrocard. That's programing and not the machines them selves since that system is used world wide.
