The W Seoul wants to charge me for an entire extra night just so we can check in early. We arrive in to ICN at 3:55am, so I don't have much choice.

He and I went out and found the pieces :(

...

Ouch, mine never totally broke into pieces , although the nose had to be rebuilt a few times, as well as the landing gear area.

Yes you do - just buy a block of four hours at the iCN transit hotel. It is in the terminal near the KE Prestige lounge. Go there and sleep for a few hurs, then head into the city.

I hadn't thought about that. Is this the Hyatt? Any idea what they charge for 4 hour blocks? Is it still possible to access the hotel after picking up checked baggage?

You are correct. Google answered that question.

The reservation section says it is for transit passengers only...

How long does it take to clear ICN? Would the hotel be more amenable if you got there around 7 a.m. (or later in the morning)? Radisson (serious  of a loyalty program) saved my bacon by allowing me to check in shortly after 7 a.m. in AMS.

That very well may be the requirement (I might have simply ignored it when I booked there).

However, they did not ask me at any time to prove that I was in-transit, I simply checked-in at some ridiculous hour and checked out at 8AM, a far more reasonable time to head into downtown.

I have checked in around 6-7 am at a few hotels and even at 3 AM once at the PPT sheraton.

Perhaps, but I still think it was a worthwhile investment. Considering that many books are much cheaper on the Kindle the savings can add up pretty quickly to recover the CapEx investment. Plus, it has the advantage of being WAY lighter and smaller than any stack of books you'd normally bring with you on a trip.
