I believe it is in NJ as of a couple of years ago.

It was definitely a learning/growing experience for us when we bought our house. We finally found our groove with the yard, and have landscapers who do the spring/fall cleanup, edging, mulching and stuff, and then we handle the routine maintenance all summer long, so it works out pretty well.

Now I wouldn't trade it. It is kind of nice to be out in the yard doing stuff. I could do without the poison ivy though... I clearly got into that over the weekend.

I have a feeling this thread is going to become a bit explosive once the FAs join in... Yikes!

Back when we started the quest to find a property to buy a few years ago all we could afford were condos/townhomes. With the plunging home values and lowering interest rates, when we finally pulled the trigger our budget had us between a 2 bedroom condo right on the Hudson river (spectacular) or a single-family home.

We opted for the single family home for the following reasons:
  • We have privacy.
  • We will never hear our neighbors.
  • We will never have to smell what are neighbors are having for supper.
  • Homes hold their value better than condos/townhomes.
  • We can slowly upgrade the house (do things like finish the basement, to add substantial value).
  • I can grill.
  • We can invite people over and never have to worry about being inconsiderate to our neighbors.
  • No maintenance fees / common charges

After doing apartment living for the past decade I'm not regretting going the single-family route. Did I  last night when I went home, mowed the lawn and then did some work on the patio? Absolutely. But it's mine. Well, it's Wells Fargo's, but in 30 years it will be mine. And I'll never have to hear my ugly neighbors having sex again.

Yes, apartment living, even luxury apartment living, can get old. My new neighbor apparently smokes.

I think my wife and I could do loft style living for a bit but eventually she wants a freestanding house.

We are currently in a condo/apartment complex and while it's nice to not worry about the yard and maintenance, I would much rather have that than listen to my neighbor's music at 4am.

There are a few lofts near downtown that we liked but the lack of grocery stores and real "life" in the downtown area made us shy away from that.

I have that one in my apartment, but otherwise I generally agree with your list. The only down-side to it is that I like being in Manhattan and such things are impossible here.

Play being suspended in Bethpage thanks to the rain. Time to switch back to the footie.

Play suspended. No $hit, really? The cameras couldn't stay dry long enough to even show a clean image.

Here in Midtown, living in a townhouse has been a decent experience. I don't hear my neighbors, I don't have to do yard work, and our HOA fees are reasonable - $125/month. However, with a growing child and us wanting another one, we need a bigger house in an area with better schools. You're in the Heights, right?

We need new uniforms. They look too much like Englands and we know how well they do in FIFA play.
