I hope to escape this purgatory for good by next Spring. Being a student was fun when that was all I had to do. When you combine it with full-time employment and a long-distance marriage, there are almost not  enough to describe it.

And you've been doing it for a long time now, too.

You're looking at this completely wrong.

CO is trying to sell seats in F. They don't want to give anything away. The real question is which is worth more: the loyalty of a Plat and their companion or the loyalty of a displaced lower-tier elite?

US / NWA think the loyalty of upper tier always trumps. CO doesn't. Chalk it up to philosophical differences.

I just wish CO wouldn't make their companion upgrade process SO INSANELY STUPIDLY COMPLEX AND POORLY ADMINISTERED. (see, here I go again... please, save me from this.)

And honestly, I bet if they looked at the Platinum Elite population and its flying habits, they'd probably find that the majority of Platinums are flying without companions the majority of the time.

At the very least, if CO would allow us to put the companion on the upgrade list before going to the airport, that would be an improvement. It's ridiculous that the only way to do it on the website is to have the companion on the same PNR, and do it at OLCI, which means that the elite member is essentially opting out of the EUA process until OLCI opens, which increases the odds of neither passenger getting an upgrade.

I've never been successful in obtaining a companion upgrade. I hear they exist, supposedly.

They seem to be extremely unpredictable. I have a success rate well over 50%, when I actually add a companion to the list. My biggest win was a Friday afternoon EWR-IAH where she managed to jump past 25+ people to the #1 spot. She cleared at the gate.

WOW! That either of you had an upgrade on that route on a Friday afternoon is pretty amazing. What was the equipment?

I run about 40-50% success with upgrades on non-Y/B fares between IAH and EWR. And usually it happens only on 764s or larger.

Geographically or professionally speaking? :D

Certainly not geographically speaking. I can't stand the Festering Pit. I think it's more a matter of clerking for a firm that isn't huge and faceless, and being about as far-removed from corporate law as possible.

A very big ^ to CO for this small gesture...

About a month and a half ago, I had to cancel a ticket that I purchased with some TravelBank funds. The balance of the purchase never hit my credit card but the TB funds were withdrawn. About a week later, I sent an email to CO asking them to credit the missing funds and was told to wait 10 business days for the credit to post. 15 business days later, I sent a follow up email to see what happened and was told they'd post in early July. Today, I received a call from a very nice CO rep who apologized for the inconvenience and told me that the funds would be credited today and that they'd also be issuing a $25 ETC for the inconvenience. I never once asked for compensation so this was a very nice gesture on CO's part. Sometimes the small things can go a long way in making a customer feel appreciated.

I can't help but wonder what some of the 1Ks would say if UA only offered them $25 for such an "inconvenience".

Starwood's  cancellation policy pretty much means I have to make a decision regarding spending Thursday night in Houston tonight.

Oh yeah, the equipment is one of the more amazing parts of the story... It was on a 738 with 16F seats. Quite impressive.

PBI is my home airport and I know many of the staff personally as well as the in/outs of the F cabin on the EWR-PBI route.

During the winter time, forget about an upgrade it is generally all paid "F" traffic (wealthy Senior Citizens and their progeny from NJ and parts of NY, etc.) The summers can be a little unpredicatable, but generally upgrades are fairly easy to come by if your a PLT and to a great extend a Gold.

I run about 25-50% upgrade precentage for Companions ex-PBI in the summer time, generally becasuse there are Golds and Silvers waiting for upgrades day of departure.
