They do indeed create a lot of noise in take-off / landing. However, I'm perfectly fine in one of the 16 F seats. The proportion of F seats is one of the things DL could (theoretically, at least) learn from NW.

Yep! Especially when you can get a -30 that was built pre-1970. Unfortunately those are pretty much gone from the fleet at this point. In fact, there are a LOT fewer DC-9s at DTW and MSP these days, based on what I saw at those two hubs over the last week. Most of what's left are the -50s, which are newer and quieter, although still quite old and loud by modern standards.
