I think we need a Houston Planespotting DO.

Not to get off of the photo discussion, but it looks like UA/LH has their own version of the Summer BF sale. Fares are <$2000 for west coast to Europe and beyond. Z fares are 200% credit in BD's program, or 425% if you're already over your 55K for the year. :)

ETA: Recent update to the MR thread says it may already be gone, so maybe not so much. Sorry if anyone got too excited.

Umm...this deal is actually still alive and well over in the MR forum. Looks like DEL and JNB routings for flights to Europe are being ticketed. Not sure that I can justify dropping $2K, and I know that I am basically all booked up during the available dates, but these are some pretty sweet premium fares for *A.

I wonder if anyone was smart enough to buy it online, and do in-store pickup, then rush out and get it? If anyone did, seems like Best Buy would have an impossible case to get the lens back or hit the buyer's credit card for the difference in price.

Don't worry. There may be a bunch of Texans in here, but don't assume that to mean we're a bunch of George W. lovin' Bible beatin' gun totin' redneck folks. Some of us are quite liberal, despite being born and raised in the Lone Star State.

Wouldn't that not be a good idea in this case? Such a scenario involves human contact, and that might not be the best thing. If the lens pricing was akin to a mistake fare, isn't dealing with people in person akin to calling the airline?

I've heard and read that the area around Austin is the political opposite of the stereotypical Texan.

Yeah, Austin is pretty diverse. To call the whole thing liberal is not correct, though. It's a melting pot, but a lot of times the "face" of Austin anti-conservative.

We conservatives are not all "Bible beatin' gun totin' redneck folk."

Politics?! When did this turn into OMNI?? :D

Unfortunately, it's a online only item. They aren't stupid enough to stock the 180L Macro at one of their store - it's a pretty obscure lens, even among Canon's L series.

From what I gather, the big cities in Texas are the (mostly) blue spots in a red state. This is from an outsider moving to Houston, who thought all Texans drove SUVs/trucks, have a gun rack, bible thumpin', et cetera.

Austin is kind of opposite, but I like to think of it as more of a laissez-faire type attitude that permeates the Hill Country. There are hippies, cross-dressers, old folks, young folks, liberals, conservatives, libertarians, etc. all hanging out in the same places.

Walk into the Texas Chili Parlor in downtown and you'll sit next to a Texas Senator on one side and a hardcore punk rocker on the other, but all three of you will be drinking Shiner. ;)

Melting pot is a good way to describe it, but I think it's more than the people, it's the area. From south of Austin with beautiful streams, rivers, etc. to north of Austin with the brush and barbwire fences, the entire area is a really strange mix.
