American bridge crew? Only time I've seen that is on a Mississippi river cruise. The Greeks used to be big too. I know Carnival Corp. likes Italians on the Fun Ships and Costa, Brits on Cunard (as if that would be a shock) and I've heard a Scotsman on Princess. Princess also employs a Captain who IIRC is Danish that is known to join the deck band in uniform after coming off the bridge: he's quite the sax player.

Not defunct, they're still there.

Cool! IIRC, I read an article a few years back (NYT, maybe) that indicated the MMA would be closed down. Good to hear they're still in business. My summer visit to their campus was very . They've got a nice spread out there, tucked away on the corner of Great Neck.

I nearly made application to the Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, Long Island (now defunct, IIRC). For a time, I flirted with the idea of being a cruise ship captain. A Princess Cruise Lines captain disabused me of that notion (apparently the reality of starting out in the Merchant Marine is altogether different from what might imagine it's like).

Also, apparently, most of the major cruise lines only hire Italians, Norwegians and Danes as captains. Dunno if that has changed in the past decade, but I can't recall ever stepping on a ship and hearing an American (or even British, for that matter... perhaps on Cunard, if at all) accent over the intercom.

Love, exciting and new

I always thought it odd that I never had a Dutch captain on any of my Holland America cruises.

The Mom is going on HAL in two weeks, TATL. I'll ask her.

I have officially lost it. I just joined a conference call a whole 24 hours early.

At least I now know why my Outlook reminder never came up.

Repositioning Cruise for Med. Summer? Those can sometimes get some intriguing ports of call (Canaries, Madeira, Morocco).

Wow, i've had days like that. Never a good thing.

Speaking of which, I meant to tell you. I was telling you to do the crazy DSM routing. Talking to the gf the other day, we had the following conversation:

Me: "You wanna go to Geneva?"
Her: "Sure. Wait, how are we getting there?"
Me: "Umm, PHL-IAH-EWR-GVA and back"
Her: "No, that's too insane. Why can't we just go directly?"

I feel your pain.
