I eventually won over my manager who agreed that is was silly to connect 3 times or have a 5 hour layover on my way to the west coast. Or that the portals mysteriously did not have the cheapest flights since they were not preferred carriers....

I'm willing to make/accept a cogent argument for a reasonable routing over a minor cost difference. It is when people purposefully delay purchasing a ticket by a few weeks to pay more on the exact same flights simply to ensure 100% EQMs or increase upgrade chances when the company policy is coach travel that irks me. Those people actually promoting such actions in public is even worse, IMO, and they pop up on here all the time.

How accurate are the AA fare buckets on seatcounter.com? My fiancee is flying in on Saturday and since I have to be at the airport to pick her up anyway I might as well try to squeeze some $ out of AA.

ETA: to be specific I was looking at LGA-DFW fares on 3/14

I am not sure seatcounter.com is accurate for AA due to my experience coming back from AMA.

I was watching SeatCounter to see if AA had any seats so I could take a bump and it showed the flights zeroed out but the agent had multiple seats available.

Could be a one-off though.

I never gamed fare buckets but I refused to go on trips where they were insisting I take flights that required 2+ connections and a day to make (domestic flights). All in the name of saving money.

Making a connection or two to get to a foreign destination is no big deal, but making more than one connection on a domestic flight is just retarded.

If it was a Y/H fare direct vs. a el-cheapo US fare connecting through PHX, CLT, LGA, and PHL, I went with the Y/H.

Making three or more connections on a domestic flight is part of a balanced mileage diet. :D

Not when they're on US or WN, that's called assisted suicide.

I'll soon find out. I've got an 8-segment Q-UP where 5 of the segments are US.

I have never connected domestically and I'm OK with that.

For my trip to STL last year the TA software wanted to put me on a US flight to CLT with a 2 hour layover to save $5. I picked CO-Ex instead. I didn't hear about it from management, but the software made me type in a reason for selecting a more expensive flight over a cheaper one.

I knew what my billable rate was and it was much more than that $5 of savings.
