What? I have no real interest in DXB.

Alright, alright, maybe I'll spend a day there...

I suspect they won't give you a visa for that trip.

Hotel industry expats, lots of them. I know a couple that both got jobs with Jumeirah after long stints in ACY. Buh-bye, full-time DXBers now.

For a 1-2 day trip I do not think one is required but EK may still issue a transit visa for it.

Ok, dumb questions of the day. I've been asked if I can grab a carton of cigs a the airport at the duty free shop on my way over the pond.

A) Can I even use the duty free shops at EWR (I thought I saw some sign about US citizens not being able to use the shops, or is that just because of the dom, int mix?

B) It's clear I won't be smoking that much for personal use on trip like this, should I risk it?

C) out of curiosity, how many cigarettes are in a carton?

(I'll bet S.H. is lurking this thread)

I wish the much rumored discontinuation of Brazil's Visa requirement for US Citizens would finally get implemented.

ConciergeMike Mar 11, 2009 12:30 pm

A) Don't think so, but not sure
B) Your call
C) US cartons are 200, but those uber-big duty free boxes can go much higher

DXB is in bad shape right now. People are loosing their jobs much faster there than here and when they do they have to leave PDQ.

A) Yes (They check your ticket and delivery your Dufree to the plane)
B) Up to you. IIRC, Her Majesty's Customs laws do indicate that Cigarettes and other Dufree items must be for "personal use." They usually won't jack with you, though.
C) 200

a) If you are flying internationally then you can purchase things at the duty free shop.

b) There is nothing to risk

c) I have no idea.

Of the three DXB expats I know, I haven't heard that any have come back to this point. Besides, with the F1 track and all the development surrounding it, they might not have to go far to stay in the region, since AUH is working on becoming the new DXB.

I don't see why not. What I saw was that they won't give you the bag at the store but deliver it to an attendant on the jetway to hand it to you just before you board (so no buying a full Y ticket for duty free, you're going!).
