You should have been dealing with a USMC gate guard, no? Marines are posted to embassies and consulates.

That's what I was thinking too but the facility itself seemed more like an office (was located on the 10th floor of a downtown SYD building) and I did not see any noticeable extra security measures. Actually come to think of it, I do not think I saw an armed guard at all (but then again, I only saw the front reception area and non of the back room stuff.)

They're open for calls later today and I'm thinking I'll give them a buzz and see if I can make an arrangement to drop off my paperwork early Monday morning and the collect it when they finish.

Agreed on part two, but I always thought there was a Marine sentry at the front door. Been a long time since I was in Europe as a civilian.

I think the logic is the local populace will deal better with a local and better a local get shot first than the marine.

That could very well have been the case. I just think they were being overly strict with their  procedures. It's the type of thing where if I could have just had a second with a staffer they'd be able to help me out.

I'll report back if I have any luck over the phone and on my next visit.

Good news is that the Koru Club (NZ's lounge) is awesome and far better than the crappy SQ one here.

While you're at it, inform someone on staff there or one of the Devil Dogs that you were denied at the front door. They will look into that post haste...heaven forbid an American citizen seeking sanctuary was told they need an appointment by some  on a power trip.

True enough. But like I said, it's been a long time since I went abroad as a civilian. The last two trips were in uniform, but the next one won't be. :D

So in other news the US consult office in SYD deserves a big

Got in a few hours ago and thought I'd try to go into the city to have pages added to my PP as I'm almost out of space.

So I checked the website for the consult and saw that you don't need an appointment to submit the request, all that's required is the completion of a form. Great. I can do that. Hopped on the train and got off at Martin Plc, walked to the consult but the rent-a-cop said an appointment was required to enter the facility.

Grrrr.

Tried to explain that this was not something that needed an appointment but my efforts were about as successful as Air Elbonia's safety & on time performance record.

So  to the US consult and I'm still mulling over what my next move should be (I'll be back in SYD next Monday and am thinking about giving it another go.)

I love the line
I will be back in SYD on Monday , as if you were just going up to Brisbane or something ^

ETA: If you bring me back tim tams

Considering that the main embassy is just 1 hr by air away, the stability of Australia, and the relatively small number of U.S. tourists it wouldn't surprise me if the consulate was a fairly limited operation.

My summer job was an entry-level retail position. 29 years later, I'm still at it. Retail, that is, not summer.

But to your point, I wake up every day and thank the stars that I'm not in traditional retail.
