We'll never be able to sell our stories to National Geographic Channel's "Locked Up Abroad" if we bring bail money.

Why is a partner at a very large hedge fund flying commercial?

Not all hedge fund empolyees make the sort of money that would warrant flying privately for business all the time, especially on routes that are well-served by commercial carriers. For example, if one is flying 200k BIS for business each year, the cost of chartered aircraft would run well into the millions on an annual basis. Owning or leasing an aircraft is no inexpensive proposition, either.

Because he's not the head partner. :) He does travel on their corporate jet but generally comercial since he is the only one that covers X industry.

The company my dad works for has 2 corporate jets and he is one of the top 10 people at his company and still only uses one of the jets 25% of the time. The problem is that they have a daily schedule (IAH-CWS) that doesnt work with his schedule so he is forced to fly comercial (IAH-LIT) which I believe may the same issue he has.

The dude that ended up in the Ecuadorian prison for smuggling yayo is lucky to be alive. The place they had him locked up in made a good ole Amerkun PMITA Penitentiary look tame.

Incorrect. An outright redemption has priority over EUA's (I have been in this situation many times). IIRC, a first class reward redemption is treated as PR1 behind only paid F passengers. Mileage upgrades also have priority over EUA's; not sure where they rank in relation to outright redemptions, though (equal to, perhaps?).

Thanks for the information, I will continue to monitor the situation.

I just had to go and stick my fingers in the electrical socket. I should avoid posting outside Teh Box.

Well, sure they don't, I'm painfully aware of that one

I just figured some part of the partner + large + hedge fund didn't add up.

Was guessing the equation was partner+large+hedge fund-25% down last year = commercial.

gbryan84 explained it as partner-junior status = commercial, so I was off a tad.

I sometimes get that with one-stops.

Me too - well, I mean, apparently I am a little nuts for not being a "nonstop snob" - and that goes back to the pre-FT/mileage-maximizing days! I guess I just never minded connections, or certainly wasn't going to pay more to avoid them...
