That's actually a good idea, depending on the fare differnce between TYR and SHV. That car might pay for itself in six months or less. Buy a used Civic or something that will last. Actually, maybe you should buy an old truck or something with a strong suspension that can handle the crappiness of Louisiana roads.

This is actually exactly what I was thinking - that or an old Corolla. Given almost weekly flights over the course of a year, It would pay for itself within that year.

There's also the option of taking the first flight on Saturday mornings, and racking up top-tier car rental status across multiple programs (or simply earning gobs of National Free Rental Days).

According to the TYR website, Avis closes at 9:45PM, National at 6PM, and Hertz at 10:30PM on Fridays. Hope you've got your Avis or Hertz memberships ready to go.

Perhaps I can reach an agreement with the National rep in TYR, if I agree to rent a car every weekend. Maybe they could just leave the keys with the Hertz or Avis people. :D

I had looked into this. IIRC, the rental car agencies in TYR close before the 8pm arrival gets in on Friday evening (the flight I would have to take to leave after work). I may just buy a clunker and station it at the TYR airport. :D

You could always pass my grandfather $50 and he'll fly you from TYR to SHV in a Beechcraft Bonanza.

Now that would make for an intriguing FM Line. :D

Paging fozz...

Any experience with the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina in SAN? I'm looking for an inexpensive hotel close to SAN and this seems to fit the bill.

Also, I read somewhere that you can walk to/from SAN from this property (it's on Harbor Island right across from the SAN entrance) - thoughts?

That would be a hefty walk (but possible I suppose).

I've never been inside, but saw it when I was there a few months ago. Looked like an absolute dump from the outside.

That's too bad. I have had really good experiences in BE.

My other BE experience was pretty good except the new menu was introduced that day , and the FA's were split in the cabin, half to the front part of BE and the rest to the back of BE , i was right in the middle and they forgot my meal , but the staff was friendly and very helpful and apologized .
This time it was , I asked for club soda after they gave me wine ,and I was told oh now you have to wait a while.

Agreed, it is certainly possible to walk it. It's probably a half mile or so. The Sheraton does have an airport shuttle, but I don't know if it circles regularly. They do have one though, I've seen it numerous times at Terminal 2 (where CO lands). There is also a Marriott Courtyard down the road in Liberty Station that is brand new and was much less expensive than the Sheraton last time I looked. A $10 cab ride could get you there, me thinks.

That's my big problem with JFK. From my office to LGA I budget 45 min. and the drive is usually sub 30. If the Deagan is kerfuffled there's enough alt. routes that it's not a big deal. A quick consultation with 1010 WINS and I'm off.

Even though JFK is only like 10 miles past LGA, those 10 miles are horrific. When going to JFK I budget at least 2 hours (to arrive an hour before the flight) and I've never got it just right. I'm either absurdly early getting in or cutting it super close. Both frustrate me to no end. Plus, on the return, after sitting in an uncomfortable airplane seat for a few hours I hate sitting in traffic for 2-3 hours to get home.

The Turnpike is no picnic either, but at least the traffic flows are a bit more predictable. And there's always the Parkway as a back-up.

Have I mentioned lately that I hate living in NY?

BTW
Im pretty certain that my Austral flight in Argentina( Part of Aerolineas Argentina) MD-80 aircraft was en EX Continental plane , the seats were in CO blue , the seat number signs were exactly the same , and they had the Airphones removed and covered up with a plate.

I checked the Airfleets and they have many ex AeroMexico MD-80s but this one looked like an ex CO .
Im not even sure that AM had the Airphone System on board their planes ever.

I don't like the first row middle seat on CO on the 767's for the same reason. Twice now when the FA's went back to take orders they started with the 2 seats and thought the other FA got my order. They continued back, skipping me.

Being not one to say anything I just sat there and then when they went back to the galley to begin prepping the meals they realized they had no order for me. I think all that was left was the mushroom (and cheese) stuffed portobello with mushroom sauce accompanied by a mushroom salad, served with mushroom soup.

Still better than LH. I was in the lav when they distributed menu's coming back from MUC this summer and they 'ed at me when I asked for one. When they went to take orders I asked what the options were (because they never gave me the menu) and the FA grimaced and told me she'd come back. She did come back, after taking the rest of the J cabin orders and informed me that I will be having the spaetzle. That's all they had left.

I can't wait for CO to join Star so I can start flying SQ to FRA again.

Yeah, the walk looked like a little long, but it was hard to tell exactly where the hotel is.

Absolute dump = no good. Perhaps I'll go with one of the SPG properties downtown instead.

Could have been a Finn Air or Spanair plane. Both had blue seats.

AM had the Airphone system in F but not in Y.
