I love DD for their coffee. Their food is passable in a pinch.

As for bagels, I haven't found any here in NJ that are as good as where I grew up in LI.

Kolaches anybody?

Actually, I'll be happy with a McGriddle. ;)

How far north are you? I'd put my guy down here in Ocean County up against just about anyone.

Are you into flavored coffee? I noticed they have many varieties, except the seemingly ridicious STRONG BLACK. It must be a regional thing, because I never got an acceptable (to me) cup of coffee in Albany. Even at Starbucks it seemed weak.

IF Dunkin Donuts had a FF style program , I would be platinum.
Whenever i walk in to my local DD , I don't even have to order, they get my coffee ready and i just hand them my gift card , which I recharge using my SPG amex.

But if you go up to a Boston area DD, you'll find that their "elite line" is just as long as the regular line, and you'll never get a donut or coffee upgrade. ;)

Sausage and cheese in a bread roll is a klobasnek. ;)

Now, poppy seed or fruit filling in a bread roll, that's a koláč.

My mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother would be proud that I can explain that :D

Best places: haven't found one in Houston. Hruska's on 71 in Ellinger, TX is great as is the Czech Stop in West, TX on I-35.

The funny thing is that they have something pretty similar for breakfast in Hong Kong. It's not Chinese, it's not English. I suspect they were brought in by Central European Jews that came to HK in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

That sounds more like a CO flight from EWR to IAH :D

I've had some fantastic Czech pastries/sausage rolls out in the hinterlands of Central Texas. My Uncle is Czech, and got my dad hooked on Taroky years ago. When I was younger, my dad would travel to the various SPJST Halls in podunkville towns (if we were lucky, Schulenburg) to play in Taroky tournaments.

All the breakfast food talk is making me want to hit the freezer. I should have some form of lunch before my interview. (Who the hell schedules job interviews for 5pm, anyway?)

MilesDavis May 15, 2008 11:27 am

People that work? :p

I had that happen to me in DE. I was working there for two months and by the third day in, the guy knew my order so by the time I got to the counter, it was ready. I've never had that happen to me at Peets or Starbucks. I was quite impressed.

I'm in Somerset County near Middlesex County. All the bagel places are mediocre. I call them rolls with holes.

Same for me at Cool Beans in the Mellon Center in Pittsburgh. Excellent service. ^
