You can theoretically do SAN - ELP in one day, but there is no way you'll want to do ELP -AUS the next day. Coming back is even worse. Do SAN - TUS, TUS - ELP, ELP - AUS. It will make you want to kill yourself slightly less.

Oh, I did it last year and I know what a killer it is. According to Google maps, ELP-AUS should take about 8 hours. Last year I did ELP-IAH and it got really bad after we passed SAT. The nice thing is I don't have to come back. :)

After SxSW I'm doing AUS-RDU and then RDU-EWR.

I did AUS-TUS on one day, and TUS-LAX the next... It can be done just fine, just make sure You have case of Red Bull with you in the car!

That's ridiculous. No way that they're scheduled so tightly that a 15 minute delay in departure time will cause them to miss a landing slot.

I know that, they know I know that, but still they insisted that they could not hold for their customers. I didn't want to argue the point that if their pilots couldn't shave 15 minutes of their 12+ hours of flying time, then maybe they shouldn't be in the airline business.

End result was that we had to hotel and feed over 25 people the past three days. CO made some nice brownie points since we repeatedly told the misconnecting customers that their airline of choice refused to hold for them and we were rebooking them, hoteling and feeding them at CO's expense, plus transfer their luggage ramp side so they wouldn't have to bother with it.

Oh, then I'd say no worries. If you start early enough out of SAN (like, 8AM or so) you get into ELP before too late so you can get some dinner and rest before day two. Enjoy SxSW, I've never gotten to go despite growing up around IAH.

Is El Paso really that dangerous apart from a bit of gang violence in isolated areas? Heck, every large city experiences gang violence on a regular basis.

I stayed at the ELP Marriott based on ssullivan's recommendation and I stayed at the Courtyard that is a little closer to the freeway at the same exit on the way back. Both stays were in late December 2008/early January 2009. They were clean, quiet, and safe. Just don't go rolling around ELP late at night and you'll be fine.

I changed our reservation to the Courtyard at the airport.

From there we're staying at the Paisano for the rest of the trip

I guess since birthday dinner is starting soon, it would be a good idea to write the fiancee's birthday card
