There's a school of thought in lower levels of football that coaches should not only insert the backups but also not call any pass plays once the score gets ridicuous. I like that, because if you're the team backing off, you've made the point that you're going to win, everyone gets at least a little playing time, you're not risking first-string injury, and keeping the ball on the ground is of course the best way to run out the clock. It's a sad commentary that the line between good sportsmanship and PC garbage seems to be such a thin one, but so it is.

I guess it's been sinking in recently that I'm getting married, and for that reason I've been fast-forwarding in my head to what I would do in parental situations. I have reasoned the following: golf and hockey are the two sports to involve a kid in if you want good sportsmanship (and to another extent, good values taught via sport) in your child as a result. Golf because players call penalties on themselves, and the opponents always shake hands on the 18th green. Hockey, you ask? He's lost his mind. Nah, I lost it a long time ago. Despite fighting, hockey is all about being good on the ice and it's a strict risk/reward system. And yes, there is a time and a place to drop the gloves, and that can be coached appropriately. Hockey and golf is also a nice balance of team and individual, and of seasonality.

I've also flashed forward (:eek:) to the day my kid wants to drive. On the table is a set of car keys. Next to them is a loaded handgun. The question to the kid is what the difference is between the two. Answer: Nothing. They're both capable of killing.

That's considered a good day, right?

I have found that coaches make all the difference in how your child plays and deal with the game. I have dealt with some bad coaching and you will need to voice your concerns right away or pull your kid from the team. Soccer is a great game and has the same balance of team and individual as hockey.

I just wish that the coach would tell me that he isn't going to play my son any further so we could just pack up our things and leave, especially when it's that cold out!
