Expect at least a few of those seats to be filled. My recent LH F flights all looked empty, but all but one ended up at least half full by actual flight time. On FRA-IAD, though, there were only three of us in F (out of eight seats); had excellent service as a result.

This is a helpful post, many people in LH F don't get seats assigned until the day of the flight.

WWTBD re London?

Wife and I are scheduled to arrive at 9pm at LHR on a Wednesday on the daytime flight from EWR. We're scheduled to tour about a bit the following day in London and then have a 9am departure again from LHR on Friday morning. Should we stay out by the airport both nights? In town both nights? Split?

I realize that we'll be paying the r/t transfers once and probably not more than that. I'm just not sure the value of being in town on Thursday morning when we wake up versus schelpping luggage versus dining options versus who knows what else.

Opinions are much appreciated.

I have found myself in the same situation several times and would recommend staying in town the first night and at the airport the second night. Although you will not arrive at your hotel until after 10:00 the first night, you will be able to hit the ground running in the morning. Staying at the airport the second night means you'll have to leave town at some point in the evening, but it beats getting up at the crack of dawn and hauling all your crap out to LHR.

Once, I stayed at a LHR airport hotel for an entire three-day visit to London. Although I saved quite a bit of money by staying out there, I would not do it again and would not recommend it. It was just too time-consuming and annoying to walk from the hotel to the Tube station and take the Tube into the city and back every day, compared with staying in town. Plus, there was no option for me to go back to the hotel to relax for an hour or two during the day; I had to stay on the go the entire day. That aspect was slightly less annoying than the actual commute, but annoying nonetheless.

1. Call.

3. Hang up.

5. Finally solve the problem.

You are correct, sir. :-:

But this post isn't helpful. :-:

The guy sitting next to me on IAD-FRA was an HON op-up from C, as C appeared to be oversold; I think they may have op-up'ed a couple of others, as well. That flight had 10 or 11 out of 16 seats filled. I also booted an HON out of 83A; I got on at the final boarding call and the guy assumed the seat was going out empty.

The other flights were about half full, and the FRA-IAD had three of eight occupado.

ETA: Upon further review, this post really is not very helpful.

Interesting call from a good friend this morning that has her first international connection this week. She didn't understand the concept of "checked through to final destination" where both boarding passes were given.

I just crossed the 50th state off my list!

Very nice - I think I'm doing OR and ID this summer merely out of principle.

That actually reminds me of a funny/crazy experience that I had on the day of the 2008 BCS national championship game (Ohio State vs. LSU), where a couple of different groups of people were trying to meet up to watch the game (none of us had tickets :(). Several people didn't figure out the difference between W and Westin...

If it wasn't for the $259+ price tag, the W Poydras would be my pick as well.

No kidding. Ugh. :( It was DISTINCTLY less than that on my Friday night in April last year - I remember being kind of amazed that it was even an option for me, financially.

You're right. Nominal ability to stay on top of your tube is a plus, but not required. :D

The best part of staying there is the ability to cut the line for the rooftop bar. The room decor is a bit wierd, IMO, but that's just my take on it. It also has a unique location, but the St Regis also is in a good location (just a few blocks from teh W, in fact).

It's a tough call. Both are great properties. For room quality, I would stay at the St Regis. For access to the historic rooftop deck and the general  wanna-be New Yorkness that is DC nightlife, I would go with the W. W also has Dogfish Head at $5 (or $6?)/bottle at the rooftop bar.

I love Oregon; only been to ID once and would gladly return.

I'd love to check out both of these places someday, though I don't think tjtenor4's parents would be very happy to know that we were staying anywhere in DC except their house... :o
