If NW fleet management was in charge, they'd argue that it has at least another 17 years before they should even consider retiring it.

Yes. They retired them around 2006.

For a good stretch there at the start of the past decade, we had the domestic equivalent of Orient Thai. DC-10s, 747-200s, DC-9s of every stripe. :D
