Chat for match today:
Me: For accounted ending in xxxx I signed up for an offer of 60,000 miles after a $3000 spend. I see now you have a 65,0000 offer. Could I have 5000 miles added to my offer as a courtesy? Tania (CSR): Robert, I have successfully raised request to match offer for 65000 miles for you. Our accounts specialists will work on this and you will be notified about the approval in 3-5 days. Will report back result. I think 5-7 minutes of time is worth the 5k points. |
Happy to report that this is my third card I've been approved for without needing to send w-2 in. I dropped my income by 25% again and it seems to be the key, just needed to call in and have them send me a text for verification.
Now I just need some mailers to start showing up... that was my last one :( |

I had to send in W-2 multiple times and never changed my income. The dropping income routine is classic confirmation bias. To each their own but no need to report something other than your full income.
If I ever get a mailer again I'll crank the income back up and see what happens. |
i don't understand the w2/paystub thing. my w2/paystub don't include all of my income claimed on the application. w2 doesn't include pre-tax deductions from income like 401k deferrals; paystub doesn't include things like bonuses, commissions, overtime, etc. and perhaps i have another source of income like a side job. not sure how citi can use these as confirmation of income... my w2/paystub are always going to be a good deal lower than any income i claim on a credit application.

I did it per recommendation of the forum and haven't had an issue ever since. It could very well be I didn't eat anything after midnight on each of these apps or the fact that I am wearing ramen socks today (socks with pictures of ramen bowls, not made of ramen), but it's made things easier for my apps.

What is the best way to close the card these days? The chat agents refuse to do it and ask me to call the 800 number. Any way to avoid calling? I cannot get SM to work either.

There is a very easy method, which strangely doesn't work for everyone, but it has always worked for DW and myself. Call the number on the back of the card, tell the computer "close account". It will ask "do you want to close this account?" Say "YES" and it's closed. Takes about 20 seconds total, and has always worked for DW and myself. No idea why some folks say it doesn't work for them, but it's so fast and easy it's worth a try to see if it works for you.
Also, I've closed the window and asked a second chat person when they tell me to call in and I've also just told them I don't want to be bothered by calling in and waiting on hold. They change their tune when you insist sometimes... probably because it will cause a poor rating when you end the chat. |

Other times, it says "We will transfer you to an agent who will help you." But even if you do have to speak with an agent, just keep saying (in reply to whatever they might ask you) "I no longer need this account; please close it." |

For an originally applied 60k mailer offer, is the match request to 75k now pretty much dead now? I can only ask for upto 5000 now for 65k?
Both me and SO got denied on 75k matching after chat person had submitted the request. |

My wife applied on 3/2 and 4/14 (approved for both). Decided to apply again today (5/12). This does not violate the 2 cards in 60-day rule. The app process cleared the application screen and she received an app ID.
Received a phone call in about an hour from Citi, after responding to a text message if they can contact us. The wife was told that she's approved but would not receive any bonus since she opened a card within a month ago. She told them to cancel the app. Too bad I wasn't close by as I would've suggested that she let them process the app and get the card open; we would see what really happens (anecdotal evidence of CSR not knowing what they are talking about). Although I would have thought she would still have received the bonus. But that window had already closed so no data point to confirm. Hopefully, this is just a one-off mad Citi rep for having to work on Mother's Day :P Jim |
