If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Was approved for Ritz Carlton card 14 months later and did nothing unusual with it, other than lower CL from 30K to 10K to free up CL for possible approvals. Two subsequent Chase apps (Chase Ink and Marriott Rewards), on separate dates 3+ months later, were declined for a "previous unsatisfactory relationship ..."
662 - frogdog51 - Chase VGCs (Reapproved in 12 months)

Tried EX Office- they seem to have zero power once the Mullah in loss prevention has issued a fatwa (my guess: some 27 year old with a god complex).

(I crack myself up - Chase, "banking on the fact", self high five.)

I didn't paid an AF the first year on my Marriott business. My feeling is that the points are the first year bonus for the spend and then the free night every year is for the AF. Those are games I don't play, too easy to get free nights other ways.......like the crazy AA churn.

I did, unfortunately.

To get the discussion back on topic, the shutdowns don't seem to be associated with people cancelling cards after a year. Pretty well documented on this thread and on other forums as to what contributes to the shutdowns. Cheers!

n.
OP here - yes its the ritz blogger touted trick scenario. I'm skeptical that is the case for shutdown.

The letter received from Chase explicitly states the reason for shutdown is "too many recent accounts" (which I do have from other banks).

You dont really think Chase would tell you the real reason(s) they shut you down other than the most obvious and most generic one?

There are previous DPs on shut downs having the cheap Ritz card trick to avoid paying AF when the posters dont have anything nearly close to your lol/24. The cheap Ritz trick has been speculated to be a shut down factor, has been for many months. IIRC the first time I read about it was last year and I was surprised how aggressive some can be, trying to squeeze everything.

I don't think its a reason because it would seem to be a pretty strange thing to put in their code-base or their review process. Having a lower limit, even if its on a premium card, isn't a bust-out risk (which I personally think is what's causing this).

But well, we can't definitively know so its all speculation. My personal speculation is that its because of what chase said it is (too many recent accounts), vs some lower credit limit on ritz.

seems like some kind of rare shutdown imo.

TL;DR CIP shut down. Personal cards are still okay.

It's not "strange" at all. People using the Ritz trick are absolutely begging to be shut down.

Based on many other reports, the personal cards are likely to be closed soon, too.

One of the frustrating things about this thread in particular is the missing details when people come here to post their stories. Very often it starts with "Chase closed my accounts even though I did nothing wrong..." and eventually leads to "Well, yeah, I did this, this and this..." which are obvious reasons for being shut down.

You didn't mention the IHG application on this thread--that's a big detail to leave out. I agree that the Ritz trick was probably at most a small contributing factor in your case, but it should have been mentioned too. If we're going to crowdsource info in threads like this, lay it all out there and let history decide why you got shut down. Leaving out details because you don't think they matter isn't helpful.

Agreed .... as many details as possible would be nice. And what seems to trigger a lot of shut downs > a new application ..... either that or something "wrong" was found MS, fraud.

My guess you would have been fine without the new Chase App even if you would have opened 3 more citi accounts

Intentionally lowering your credit line to avoid the annual fee will most likely lead to a shutdown as well.

Where is the evidence for this claim? Many people, going back the previous version of the Ritz Carlton card, took advantage of Chase's incorrect interpretation of the rule, and I do not recall any report of a closure that Chase attributed to this choice.

I didn't give all the details because I clearly mentioned that I gave more details in the reddit megathread. It wasn't because I was trying to hide something or whatever, just laziness. Crowdsourcing of info is happening there much better. Here is mostly discussion.

In the reddit megathread I clearly say that the IHG application was the trigger. Note that my SO did get shutdown 4-5 days after me, and for him there were no applications, the only trigger is that I was shutdown and he's an auth user on my cards. Again, more details in reddit thread.

As many have already said, a bank will not give you the exact reason but a more generalize one. Avoiding the AF falls under unsatisfactory relationship. In your case, they decided to go with too many accounts open. Keep in mind that many people get deny a card for opening too many accounts, but a full shutdown involves more than that.
