If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Zero cards this month, last month 2. Balances rather insignificant to income (which Chase would know). I usually pay down the balances before statement date.

I have a hunch this is a culling... likely to hear more stories soon.

Given previous stories of Chase account closure, I'll say again that now is the time to move redeem a bunch of one's hard earned URs. And don't make the assumption that many did during the Citi culling a year ago; I don't do as much manufactured spending as thehawk75, so, I have nothing to worry about', or 'I only do a little bit of manufactured spending they won't be looking at me'. Many were sad to have uttered such words when Citi's axe did fall on them as well.

I guess I will know what [I guess I shouldn't share his name in public, but CSR did give it to me] in 'Chase Card Services Executive Office' has to say in about a week when my official letter arrives.

My hunch is it will be short, and boiler plate, and not really say anything other than 'after careful review of your accounts we have decided to end our credit card relationship with you', or something to that effect.

So, can anyone chime in as to how long Chase blacklists last? Is it a permanent thing? There must be some AARP guys around here who can share.

Have hardly done any MS with chase either in the last 8 months or so.

Just happened today, so, I have no other details.

UR accounts still seemed to be working, so, I've made all transfers and redemptions I could. Miles landed in UA nicely, don't see them at IHG yet...

EDIT: And just realized for added irony, this is about a year to the week that Citi performed the same stunt with me. March/April seems to be a bad bad bad time of year.
You actually transferred UR points to IHG?

I actually like IHG. Had some good luck with points breaks in the past. Didn't transfer much, just a top off.

And at any rate, when one is talking with CSR taking as many notes as they can, while at the same time being told that UR points would be forfeited since account is closed, but, I can see when I'm logged in that I can still redeem them... well... let's just say this was a rushed redemption. Did what I thought seemed best given the crummy circumstances.

Well, closing all of ones CC's for very minimal MS (with them) and no churning in 2 years seems rather nuclear. Perhaps this is the 'atomic bomb'... and clawback would be the 'hydrogen bomb' ?

Agreed, they seem to have turned the key and punched the button on some targets.

Well, you can't expect every bank to send you the long detailed explanation you received from "Your Security Team" at Citi!

But in both cases you seem to be one of the "lucky" ones, able to redeem points in time.

Or if not high balances/spend maybe some type of negative marks from previous shutdown on IDA/ARS, credit reports, ChexSystem etc that were discovered during a soft pull? There are also reports of Chase calling Bold card holders and asking questions. Maybe Chase's analytics are getting better or they are just devoting the resources to follow up.

If I'm going out I'm going out on my shield. Its time to order more GC anyway.

I like IHG too, but just could never transfer my UR points to them. IHG points are just to easy to earn w their constant stackable promos. I understand just wanting to get them out quick though. All my UR points always end up with UA

Lately there are a lot of account closures due to stacking promo codes. You may want to read threads in IHG forum.

I received that call about my Ink Bold last July. Didn't answer any questions. I just said "oh, I'm pretty busy this week, can you call on Tuesday?" and they never called back.

Guess my non-reply didn't throw any red flags since my accounts are still open, though I just moved about half my UR points out to be safe.

Never received any of the phone calls regarding my IB or IP accounts that others have reported. Simply shut down.

Having now received a letter, dated a week before my cards stopped working, it appears this action came from the banking side. Letter says they're going to close my checking/savings account come 'late April'. It appears my cards worked for a week after the date at the top of the letter.

Now... what was I doing with my bank accounts? Nothing!! Basically just a place that held money. Very few transactions over the past year. During the MVD days I did make a few CA's there, and deposited a few MO's there... but again this activity stopped nearly a year ago, and, not much was done there anyway since I spread things out among various banks.

No other bank accounts have been closed, so, not sure what would be in Chex... but now given this Chase action I'm going to have to make sure they don't put anything slanderous like 'suspected fraud'. I've checked the big 3 reports, nothing derogatory. Only non-stellar items are the Citi 'closed by grantor' CC accounts. Never checked IDA/ARS. Perhaps it's time to do so.

As far as the 'official letter' goes.. even more brief than Citi when they closed my CC's.

We recently reviewed your account and determined that we will bee closing it on '[Late April]'. Please accept are apologies for the inconvenience.

We want you to have enough time to complete pending transactions and open an account at another bank. Here are some actions to take in the coming days...

etc.
etc.
etc.

So, as far as I can tell is they 'recently reviewed my account' and then 'determined to close it'.

I'm trying to correspond with them to see if there's anything I can do to remedy the matter, or, in the least if they can inform me as to what they found when they reviewed the account if it was a matter of public record so that I can correct misinformation... but... as of this point I'm not optimistic. As of now planning to move all money out before the account closure date and close the accounts myself the day before their action date so in hopes that it appears as me closing the bank accounts instead of Chase on the Chex system.

Reading this thread has made me somewhat paranoid. I'm worried because it seems all or most if the shutdowns have been related to having a checking account with Chase. I've had my checking account with Chase for a long time, ever since college. Initially, I was with WaMu, which got bought out by Chase.

Nevertheless, I deposited some MOs and did a few CAs last year, but then moved all my activity to other smaller, local banks. Most if my AP deposits also went to my Chase account, but I've moved that to a different account now. I don't know if I should preemptively close my checking account.

I preemptively closed mine towards the end of the year after the earlier reports of shutdowns seemingly initiated on the checking side. What will you lose by closing it? And if they don't audit closed accounts (would they?) you potentially have a lot to gain.
