Each to their own I like BA178, leaves around 8am, means I get up early the day of the flight and am already pushing my body back to UK timezone. Arrive 7-8pm, have dinner, then bed. The following day I'm fit for work. The overnight flights mean I get 3-4 hours sleep at best, land the following morning, and feel like crap all day.

Random question: but can you have dessert AND cheese board? Or is it rude to ask for both?

Yes you can if they have spare - and whilst it might feel awkward asking, worst case is they say no.

it’s not automatic but you can ask. When I feel hungry enough that I’d like both, I usually decide which one I care about most and say eg “could I please have the cherry and almond pudding? If there are enough for everyone, I’d love to also have the cheese plate” that way my top pick is guaranteed (rather than them giving you what others don’t want!). They will then typically come back to me after the rest of the cabin is served and more often than not I get both, though as a ggl I know I’m reasonably high up on the list of people crew aim to please in priority so not sure how the chances would be for eg someone with no status or someone who’s been upgraded.

when did it switch to either/or? this discussion was already done last year in which it was made "clear" that one could ask for cheese AND dessert?

I know I’ve read it somewhere but I can’t find the info on what meal is served depending on take off time - 0930 out of LGW to ANU i presume the main meal is (an early) lunch ?

Yes, just flew this route last week and can confirm, the main meal service is a full hot meal/lunch, followed by afternoon-tea before landing.

Menu

Starter and soup

Main course, the Asian inspired beef

Afternoon tea

If I may just take a moment to say a huge thank you to everyone who posts here including their photos, both food and menus, as well as opinions too and of course timings etc. That with the sprinkling of our Staffers who take the time to post as well is invaluable to this forum in my humble opinion.

In the first few weeks it has gathered a lot of momentum and from a personal point of view I really enjoy reading this thread as well as the other catering threads too, F, CE, WTP etc.

Keep it up please whenever you can as it's really a great resource appreciated by everyone from all the regular travellers to infrequent flyers.

Menu from the BA114 JFK-LHR 21.35 departure last night. No food pics as I turned it down for sleep.

Got my first Toronto flight in J later this month, in fact, not had a short East Coast for a long time, have been heading mainly to West Coast direct or using AA. What's the best method to avoid afternoon tea? Is there an alternative at the moment, or is a special meal a good way ?

Not sure which flight your on but as I understand it the earlier flight the BA 93 gets the afternoon tea as the 2nd serving. The later BA 99 gets the light meal.

Meal choices may differ from then to now of course but you get the idea. Here's previous excellent posts by corporate-wage-slave re East Coast offerings on such flights. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Having read this, I tried the "I'd love both" tactic which was completely ignored with only the 1st choice appearing, my next long haul flight will be LGW - MCO I'm hoping my change of status form Bronze to Silver might increase my chances.

Echoing comments upthread that the cod is incredibly good. Must get if you're flying LHR-USA. DO&CO outdid itself here.

Aircraft swap from an all-CS 777 to the old 777, and fortunately my seat assignment held in F.
