CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Already 2/14 No reimbursement yet, what do you think might have happened? Its been more than 4 days, I’m guessing the weekend was an issue?

Posted as AMERICAN AIRLINES 45107425 - 800-433-7300, TX instead of MISC TAX/ FEES in the description, but in the flight details section there is
Document Type: MISCELLANEOUS TAX(S)/FEE(S).
Same here, bought 100$ GC Amex Plat on 2/10. Still not reimbursed. Had the same "MISCELLANEOUS TAX(S)/FEE(S)" in my GC purchase on 2/1 and this was reimbursed in 3 days

EDIT: it just posted !

And, yes, in my small 4 GC sample, weekends appeared to slow things down a bit.
what can I say -- got reimbursed right after your comment. Cheers.

Interesting/Frustrating Data Point:

1/30: Purchased 2 x $100 GC on Amex Plat.
  • One (1) Said: MISCELLANEOUS TAX(S)/FEE(S)
  • One (1) Said: FREQUENT FLYER FEE/PURCHASE
2/2: Reimbursed for $100.

I still haven't seen (and I don't expect to see) the 2nd $100 reimbursement.

Sometime in Jan: selected AA as airline of choice
Waited about 2 weeks to make sure it took effect...I think you only need to wait 48 hours but I forgot about it.

14 Feb: reimbursed $100, posted as 13 Feb
14 Feb: purchased $100 vGC, and in a separate transaction purchased a $50 vGC
17 Feb: reimbursed $100 and $50, posted as 16 Feb

Hoping someone knows the answer. Did a search and didn't see anything. I know the wiki says we can use up to 8 gift cards and we can pay the difference with a cc, but does anyone know if we can use gift cards and a AA voucher and pay the difference with a cc? Thanks in advance.

When you use a gift card that does not exceed the value of the ticked you are taken back to the payment screen to select another payment method so I assume you could select an AA voucher as 2nd/3rd payment method. Don't know for sure though.

Do you have more info on this waiting period? I selected AA and purchased $50 vGC on the same day (Jan 31st). Haven't seen any reimbursement.

Also curious about the waiting period. I changed my airline to AA with a phone rep in the morning, and confirmed through Amex website that it is indeed showing AA before I bought the eGC at night, all on the same day. No reimbursement yet.
