CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.
Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."
Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:
Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.
* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

2/10 Purchased 100x2 GC on Plat, 100x1 on PRG.
Already 2/14 No reimbursement yet, what do you think might have happened? Its been more than 4 days, I’m guessing the weekend was an issue?
Posted as AMERICAN AIRLINES 45107425 - 800-433-7300, TX instead of MISC TAX/ FEES in the description, but in the flight details section there is
Document Type: MISCELLANEOUS TAX(S)/FEE(S).

Too soon to be concerned. I cleared 2x (two Plat cards) 2x $100 already. One thing I noticed was that although in retrospect the account would show something like purchased 1/24, reimbursed 1/26 (or maybe 1/27 ... it was not always two day separation), the purchase might well have been made 1/23 and the reimbursement would not have appeared on the account until 1/27 or 1/28. And, yes, in my small 4 GC sample, weekends appeared to slow things down a bit.

Interesting/Frustrating Data Point:
1/30: Purchased 2 x $100 GC on Amex Plat.
I still haven't seen (and I don't expect to see) the 2nd $100 reimbursement.

Sometime in Jan: selected AA as airline of choice
Waited about 2 weeks to make sure it took effect...I think you only need to wait 48 hours but I forgot about it.
10 Feb: purchased $100 virtual gift card
14 Feb: reimbursed $100, posted as 13 Feb
14 Feb: purchased $100 vGC, and in a separate transaction purchased a $50 vGC

Hoping someone knows the answer. Did a search and didn't see anything. I know the wiki says we can use up to 8 gift cards and we can pay the difference with a cc, but does anyone know if we can use gift cards and a AA voucher and pay the difference with a cc? Thanks in advance.

Also curious about the waiting period. I changed my airline to AA with a phone rep in the morning, and confirmed through Amex website that it is indeed showing AA before I bought the eGC at night, all on the same day. No reimbursement yet.
