This thread is a continuation of discussion which began HERE in 2011. It was very active in 2014, read HERE.

Referrals and self-referrals are an important part of churning Canadian-issued American Express cards. It is appropriate to discuss how the referral process works in this thread. However, please do not offer or request referrals here.

Use only this thread, and do read the Wikipost carefully before posting:

Referral Offers (post only in this thread, no referral links, read Wiki post first).

JerryHung: I figure I'll include all CURRENT AMEX Canada offers here (no referral links) for anyone curious about what the bonus and fees are
This is not an all-inclusive list, only the "good" offers, so feel free to add new offers

Can anybody tell me when will I receive the sign up bonus? I used a 60k referral link to sign up the Platinum card (CANADA). I received 10k when I met the $1000 spending point. After a month, I have not received the rest 50k yet. How long its take for most of the people to receive the point? THANKS!

It can take up to 8 weeks from the date you met the $1000 spend. From personal experience, if by the ~7th week you still have not received the points you can call customer service and they will send a request to the points department who will give you a manual adjustment of 50k.

secure message AMEX to ask about missing 50K points

worst they'll say it takes 8-10 weeks after crossing the $1000 spending threshold, but you'll get your other 50K

The person who referred you got the 10K/15K referral points, yes? just another way to confirm you DID use the referral link as expected

Get your SPG AMEX while they're still there. Marriott is buying Starwood and the transaction will close mid 2016. who knows what will happen after that.

I checked with Amex they said it is a 60k referral bonus, and it took 8-10 weeks. Thanks

In how many parts does the 51k AeroPlat bonus come? I just got 25k after my first statement, I'm assuming I'll get the other 26k after the minimum spend?

Smile Newbie Upgrading from Gold to Platinum!

Hello,

I am new to the world of churning or CC bonuses and travel rewards in anyway. I have had the AMEX Gold Rewards card for the last 6 years and have continued to pay the $150 for the last 5 years.

I have ~160K MR and after doing some research am thinking of upgrading to the Amex Platinum.

Here is my plan and I am wondering what are somethings I should look out for especially given your past experiences:

I have self referred myself from Gold to Platinum and cancelling my Gold card so I don't have to pay the $150 again. The 15K points are already reflected in my MR account. The $150 will go towards paying my $699 fee. My first question is - should I cancel my gold or downgrade to a no-fee card? Will that keep my history with Amex? Am I even allowed to do this? Also impacts on closing an old good standing card? I should mention, it is not my oldest card so not sure of the impact. Can anyone comment on this?

I am looking to use the platinum for one year given I have a few travel plans this year and I like to use the benefits of the card. I would like to essentially downgrade to a Gold Rewards card once my first year is up. I know I will not get the rewards again but I would like to maintain my account with Amex in one way or the other. Has anyone done this?

If I use the $200 credit this year and use the $200 credit again in 2016 prior to cancelling, would Amex try to clawback the $200 for using it twice in one year? Does anyone have an experience with this?

Any other good points to keep in mind? Appreciate all the help in supporting a newbie.

Thanks!

Will report back when the card arrives and after $500 is spent.
Crossed $500 within my first month. No go for the welcome bonus. Oh wells, that was expected. At least my MR's are alive and I got the self-referral bonus.
