Happened to me today also. Agent didn't offer anything. no waive fee, no bonus etc. I have 60 days from the date it was billed to cancel.

Just curious, If I close my account before the bonus post, will I lose it?

AMEX originally offered me 800 points when I called to fish for offers for my PRG last month. I applied for Everday, got it, transferred some points to BA and then called to cancel over the weekend. After waiting for 10 minutes or so, the rep answered, asked why I wanted to cancel, I said I had several cards I like better than the fee. She offered me $175 to offset fee. I asked if there was a points option. 25K points. I spent ~13K last year with most of that in the last few months.

I overall really like AMEX and am glad they gave me the offer so I could keep it.

So maybe I should call again for another rep? I spent like 40k+ last year on the PRG.

Call again. First rep seemed antsy and even eager to cancel my personal PRG. I tried again in five minutes. This rep offered to downgrade to EDP, points, or something else. I stopped listening after I heard "points". I took the 25k. He thanked me for x years with them, hopes I continue to enjoy the benefits of the card, etc. What a difference from the first rep. My fee is going to post in a few weeks.

Edit: Confirmed that the $30k spend bonus on my card is good for this year. I opened Feb 2014.

Called in the other day after finding out the PRG lost the 15k points for the 30k annual spend and was offered 25k points which I took. The CSR said this was a one time only thing and that next year I wouldn't be eligible for the retention bonus and she was making a note on my account that I agreed to that.

My question is, that if I upgrade to the Platinum card this year (I always get 100k offers in the mail), will I lose my 25k retention after it posts?

Most likely you are not receiving 100,000 point upgrade offers. You will need to apply for the Platinum card, and make the qualifying spend. After the Platinum card is issued and linked to the same Membership Rewards account you may safely cancel the Premier Rewards Gold card.

Called back in today - wouldn't budge on the 5k + 2.5k after 2k spend in 60 days. Checked with retention specialist, came back said the same thing - decided to take it, and will fight the good fight again when my DL SM Plat Biz renews later this year - b/c I *will* cancel that unless fee is offset.

(Yeah, basically they called my bluff with seeing both cards open, but most of my spend between the 2 was on the Personal)

Called for a Personal Platinum this morning. Got offered nothing. I don't ever use the card. Just the annual $200 purchase of GC to get the $200 reward.

Any advice?

PRG - 15,000 points now and 5,000 points after $3k spend in 60 days

Called earlier this week and received 25k MR to keep the account open after having to hear about all the new Cent Lounges coming that I already knew about. In the end, I decided to take the offer. I think that I might take a break from it next year if there are no new added benefits.

I opened the card in Jan 13 for 100k and put at least $20k MS on it last year to repay a MR points advance.

Just got offered 25k MRs for the PRG. Spent a little over 20k last year, mainly bills. Accepted without hesitation

Yup. I called back, and asked for the retention department. She offered me 25k. So I took it.

The first person I talked to wasn't even in the retention department I think. Told me there is no offer for me.

Called and they stuck to their guns on the $100 offer on Personal Plat, first year AF posted last month, spend around $20k~

Gave me the whole show on the benefits, when I used my airline credit, lounge access, etc etc. Shot each down with logical explanations--credit great but the AF is much higher, lounge was actually packed/very dirty at DFW last week, Citi Exec offers access to the AA lounges I signed up for the card originally for, etc etc. Didn't budge, closed card.

It's really uncomfortable calling on a daily basis when they leave notes for each other that you called yesterday....

Called Amex today and asked to cancel my PRG, citing the high $175 annual fee (due MAR 21st) and loss of 15K MR bonus for $30K+ spend.

As others have posted, the rep summarized the PRG benefits, and then I was offered 25K MR points to not close. No haggling. The call took 2-3 minutes.

I've had the card 2 years, put ~$35K on it each year.
