AmEx PRG
This was my 5th or 6th call for an offer, received:
15k MR points now with another 5k MR points after 3k spending in 60 days. other offer was $75 now and $75 after spending 1.5k in 60 days. I took the points. |
Membership Rewards Gold. $36k annual spend. Called to cancel. Was offered only a downgrade to a different card. No retention offers. Second agent also said no retention offers. I asked if that meant Amex didn't value my membership. He said "not enough to keep you without a $175 fee." Will cancel after transferring all my points out.

Personal Plat 25000 miles or $200 credit took miles. 35k spend plus I have a business plat I think that helped

Called today to cancel AmEx Platinum MB. 2 year old card, about $5k/year. Was offered 5k points + 2,500 more after $1k spend. Will call back after my statement closes and see if it's better since I just put a $2k airline ticket on the card.

Called again today - 15K, and the customer service representative was being particular nasty. Only ~4K spend in '14, about $15K in '15. Going to try again, but probably just go ahead and cancel. |
I canceled my CSP a few months ago and have significantly shifted my spend to my AMEX PRG card. I've had maybe 13K in spend over the last 12 months and 8k of it in the last 3 months. I called today to see what offers I could get to offset the annual fee on the card after reading about people getting 25K MR points for less spend, etc. I laughed when they offered me 800 points, that's right 800 not 8,000, but 800.
So now I am uncertain what to do. Will I have any luck trying chat or calling back in the future? I have 60 days to get a refund. Initially I was going to just get the Everyday and leave the points, but I'm thinking about transferring my 60k points to BA while the bonus is on going and closing my account all together. I'm in the US Airways spend $750/month get 15,000 points thing so I'd much rather focus my spend on that card if AMEX only values my business at 800 MR points. |
You may as well open the everyday. You get 10k pts and a year of amazon prime (after $1000 spend) and it allows you to wait and decide what to do with your points. There is no fee so it doesn't cost you anything to keep it open.
Once the Everyday is open (not before) I'd just call back and tell them that the card is worthless to you since they got rid of the 15k MR pts for $30k spend. It might be worth mentioning that when they announced the cancellation of that benefit, they specifically said that they were cancelling it so that they could evaluate what new benefits would be more useful to their cardmembers, and ask them what new benefits you will be getting. If they don't give you a decent amount of pts, cancel. That's what I plan to do (I already opened the Everyday card so I'm ready to cancel the PRG if the retention bonus is not good enough) |
SPG Business card. Had for two years. About $15K on the card this year. Offered and accepted $100 statement credit.
