"Hold", "Pending", "On Request", "Purchased" and "Ticketed" Status: What does it mean?
Purchased or award itineraries may both show one or more of these
Your itinerary may show as on "Hold"; this means you may have not paid for it yet, or it may indicate your action to purchase (award or purchase" hasn't processed yet. Keep an eye and call if it doesn't process to "On Request" or "Pending" fairly quickly.
Your award or purchased itinerary may show as "On Request", "Pending", "Purchased" or "Ticketed" when you look at it online. To travel you need a "Ticketed" itinerary with a ticket number. AA ticket numbers begin with "001" followed by 10 numbers (e.g. #0012345678901), not a six letter (on AA) PNR*. On UA, 016-, etc.
If one is traveling in months or weeks, it could take a day or more to pass from "On Request" or "Pending" to "Purchased" and on to "Ticketed", depending on whether it needs verification from partner airlines (can take 72 hours or more weekends and holidays) or go to the Rate Desk for approval.
*In the airline and travel industries, a passenger Name Record (PNR) is a record in the database of a computer reservation system (CRS) that contains the itinerary for a passenger, or a group of passengers travelling together. A PNR is merely a record of an itinerary; it does not imply or replace true ticketing. Your ticket numbers are evidence you have purchased an itinerary and the airline has approved and permitted it.
AA PNRs (passenger name record, aka itinerary or flight confirmation number) is always comprised of six letters (other airlines may use numeric as well), is merely a temporary handle for your itinerary. It ultimately "recycles" some time after the PNR is cancelled or used up.
The ticket number (AA also uses "document number") is thirteen numbers, and the airline designator for AA is "001" (UA is "026", etc.) Ticket numbers are the gold standard, indicating you really do have a ticket, and may be necessary in requesting adjustments, refunds, improperly assigned mileage credit, etc.
With AA you should receive a ticket number on the e-ticket email, and on the receipt. Unfortunately, the exceptions seem to be award tickets, where sometimes we must do a bit of digging.

Flights not on American Airlines, American Eagle, or AmericanConnection® are on a request basis only. Fares and availability are subject to change. (aa.com)
Q: Why are revenue tickets on other airlines on a request basis only?
A: Other airline reservations are on a request basis only and may take 24 hours or more for confirmation. In addition, some airlines require post-booking reconfirmation of reservations made on aa.com. Please check with the airline for more details. (aa.com)

AA Conditions of Carriage, Section I(a)(2): "No person shall be entitled to transportation except upon presentation of a valid ticket."
Your itinerary online will reflect ticketing condition:
Pending or On Request mean your itinerary is essentially an offer, which might require processing for fees and taxes, approval and confirmation by a partner airline, etc. This can take 72 hours - longer over weekends and holidays, or if the trip is some time away.
"Purchased" or means the ticketing has been approved, but is awaiting issuance of a ticket.
"Ticketed" means you now have a Ticket Number (AA ticket numbers begin with "001" followed by 10 numbers, E.g. #0012345678901) - emailed to you; or, from your booking on aa.com, when you select "Print Receipt", you should be able to print a receipt with ticket number.
When you see your itinerary online, additionally you will be able to "Print a Receipt" with ticket numbers if your itinerary is fully accepted and ticketed. If it is not and you can only "Print Itinerary" rather than "Print Receipt", the ticket has not been issued as yet.
If Print a Receipt option is not available despite status being Ticketed, copy and paste the following URL into your browser on the same page as the displayed trip.
By travel time, you need one (or more) Ticket Number - do not presume to travel with just the six letter PNR. The ticket number is the "gold standard"; a PNR recycles, and is merely the handle for an itinerary.

To check your ticket's validity, fare class, detailed fare rules, etc. go to the AA Refunds site and enter your AA ticket number and you can see your ticket information before getting to a refund request.
You can select "Request a Receipt" or "Request a Refund"; prior to processing the refund request, you can see the detailed fare rules.
See post #261 for further information on checking ticket validity using the Refunds site.

I am also still to receive my $9.80 Trip Credit email which was the change after the new fare was calculated.
update: Been able to access a receipt with the copy&paste link in the wiki. It does show the new ticket number. Subtotal/payment etc are all weird: $377.07 subtotal, as well as taxes -$1,116.93, which doesn’t make any sense to me, but I presume it’s simply because it’s a change and not a booking ex-novo.
It has assuaged my concerns. Thanks to FlyerTalk people as always!

Hmmm...
When try to use the URL to print my ticket the part of the right says "unavailable". It says ticketed, but no ticket number. I'm calling.
Edit: I called in. The agent said that the ticket was reissued and have me a new ticket number, which I confirmed was different from the old ticket number.
She said that the reason I couldn't view the receipt online has something to do with the taxes and fees. I didn't quite understand what she was saying -- something about the fees not lining up or something like that. I may be due a refund of $5.60 due to the change removing a segment (which I'm going to ignore), certainly until after I fly.
So now I have a ticket number written on a piece of paper... I'm not quite sure what to do with it. I would really like some confirmation from the AA system that this ticket is fully paid and matches my itinerary.
Edit again: Searching by ticket number does, indeed, pull up my reservation. I would love to see a receipt though.

Which browser are you using? Yesterday night I used Safari on my phone and using the URL from the wiki worked well, but today it didn't. I just opened it with Chrome on my laptop and it worked. Guess it's all IT problems... I’ve printed it off now, so at least I have a copy.
This is what I see when I try to print the ticket using the url in the wiki:
I'm worried I won't be able to check in. Travel is not until late June so I have time to sort this out.

Apparently this issue has been around for many years now. This is a post from 2019... And there's no way to get the ticket number, apart from contacting Twitter.

In expensing a trip I discovered I did not have a copy of a recent 001 ticket in my google email. It seemed strange as I tend to keep everything and just archive messages. I went on AA's site and requested a copy via the ticket number and surname. The system gave an error. I called the EXP line and asked for a receipt. They were surprised I could not get it online, but worked on it in a while and was told I'll get it in the next hour or so. 24hrs went and I still had no receipt (yes, I checked my spam folder, etc). I called again the EXP line. The agent worked on it for a while; then she told me that she created a further itinerary that she queued to the ticketing team, who apparently deal with this, and that I should have it in the next 24hrs. It's now 3 days since that call and still have not got hold of the ticket. I now wonder whether I ever got the ticketing email in the first place (I can find messages for the itinerary on hold, for check in etc, but not the ticketing one, and I checked in with the app). If I check the PNR she created, I can see it's a valid PNR but no flight detail, nor price comes up. I am getting their emails - in fact I even purchased another itinerary in the meantime and got the ticket OK.

Honestly I don't care that much about getting the recipt or the ticket number (though I already have the ticket number; the EXP agent read it off to me, and I can look up the res using the ticket number so I know it's right). What I care about is being able to check in and fly. Is the ticket likely ok?

I have another trip (to Seoul) that has taken a schedule change. This one is a paid ticket. It's ticketed, but, the receipt won't come up (even using the URL in the wiki)
Is this the secret sauce to get the trip to post as distance-based? Because that would be quite a coup...

I went to the AA ticket counter at LHR last week, and the kind agent printed a receipt for me. Now, interestingly, I can input the ticket number on aa.com and the receipt does show correctly!

Award On Request Then Changed
I booked a partner award on JAL 3 weeks ago and the booking has been "on request" ever since. Last week, I received notification that my itinerary was changed. AA changed my flight from a 1 stopover to a 2 stop with a redeye. When I rechecked the flights online, my original itinerary is no longer available and the cost of everything has more than doubled so I can't even cancel and rebook. I have a couple of questions:
1. I've never had an award flight stuck on "on request" for 3 weeks. Is this the norm now? How long will it take to get it booked/confirmed?
2. Should I wait till the flight is booked to request for changes or do it now? I'd prefer to change the redeye to a daytime flight even if it means leaving a little early.
Thanks for your help!

sadly it appears the "on request" is taking forever ...and when you make a change ...it goes back to "on request" to the back of some huge line...waited three weeks...then they changed my flight so had to start all over again...and now...they have changed my return to some unknown...so far have lost a full day of my vacation...

I ticketed several awards recently (some for next year), none of them took more than a day. However, the most recent one has been On Request more than a week. Twitter double checked and assures it's not a CC issue and just in the miserably long queue.
I've ticketed probably 40 AA awards over the years, this is the first one to take anywhere this long that (they say) isn't due to CC issue.
