It appears there was no NOTAM, and no indication that the taxiway in question was closed. Of course, one would assume instructions from ground control did not send them there.

Not clear either why it took so long to get them out of there.

Anyway, not really such a black and white issue.

+1

Well, "take second exit right" or even take exit 23-2R would have been the hell confusing, without NOTAM and no barriers (and maybe normal signage of closed exit missing cuz construction?)... So, most likely a human error indeed, but let's not jump to conclusions as to which human... as Stranger said. Come and drive around Montreal, sometimes... you'll end up in the wrong exit for sure once or twice. Some of our signage appears to be designed for people who already know where they're going.

Anyway... conjectures...

Is this going to be seriously investigated? Or does it fall into the no one was killed / injured category so life goes on until it happens again and someone does get injured?

One of the pictures had an excavator on a flatbed. With mostly rolling through "rough terrain", the main boomb with some lifting straps would have no trouble dragging it back to dry ground.

I said that, being careful to use the 'likely' qualifier.

You don't know that.

I'm guessing still down at the S RESA project.

I saw that excavator, but figure that might have been the last option considered. One doesn't do brute force with a $200M airplane. But...I don't have the inside info to rule it out, so this is plausible, despite the audible shuddering from every airline executive between here and Narita.

I'm going to assume there is a manual somewhere for how to tie a rope to the landing gear of the aircraft. It's just force, and no less avation-ey then the farm tractors painted in Jazz colors driving around Pearson.

We don't know exactly what happened, so it's not fair to speculate.

That said, the airport charts and ATC instructions didn't send anyone else down the wrong taxiway.

Even though we tend to arrive at the same conclusion, this statement isn't even close to being sound logic, I'm afraid.

Yep, tie a rope around the landing gear. What could go wrong? This ain't a Corb Lund song, and the Jazz tow tractors use...wait for it...aircraft tow bars. None of which have been adapted to fit a Hitachi excavator.

It just hasn't been a good run for AC in Japan lately.

Thanks jasdou for the audio link. I interpreted the solution as using a regular tug to access the front of the aircraft, but they needed to place steel plates on the grass in order for the heavy tug to get into position. The grass and semi-paved construction surface must not have been able to support its weight.

Hey tracon, we have far more barriers than plates...so speak slowly.
