For longer connecting time, where do you stay and if at hotels how do you manage where you arrive early in the morning and depart late that day? I hate to book for 2 nights for a partial day stay.

A lot of airport hotels offer day rates. Just put the same date for check-in and check-out and you should see these rates pop out. They are usually pretty much the same price as a single night.

I just did this in a few cities.

Arrived HND 0955, stored bags in an airport locker, went to an onsen, then dinner, then a bar, then back to HND for a 0055 departure.

Arrived HKG 0430, and got a day room. That required my top status at the hotel chain (can't recall if it was Hilton or Accor) to allow day-rate check-in that early. Slept until noon, checked out at 1300, stored bags all day. Picked bags up, made our way back to the airport, and made our 2225 departure.

Arrived BKK 0015. We went to a hotel where we had a regular booking for one night. Checked out, stored bags, and explored Bangkok. Then we had a 2240 flight.

Airport lockers are your friend. Day rates are useful for 16-18 hour layovers. But if you're closer to 24, a regular rate should suffice. Early check-in and/or late check-out make it much easier, which is where hotel status can help.

Just booked my first J redemption for wife and I. Wish I booked earlier for summer 2019 as the outbound and inbound flights were very limited.

YYZ-ORD (AC Y)
ORD-BUD (LO J) - stop
BUD-ZRH (LX J) - 22 hour overnight layover
ZRH-VCE (LX J) - 8 hour layover
VCE-IST (TK J)
IST-MLE (TK J) - stop
MLE-SIN (SQ J) - 11 hour layover
SIN-BKK (SQ J) - destination
BKK-CDG (TG J) - 14 hour layover
ORY-LIS (TP J) - 20 hour overnight layover
LIS-YYZ (TP J)

155k points each and $304 in taxes + booking fee

Originally had fees close to $700 each with over $500 in carrier surcharges under YQ and XT. Asked for a super nice supervisor who recalculated all the fees and I’m getting back almost $400 each! Super thrilled with the low taxes!

YYZ-ORD (AC Y)
ORD-BUD (LO J) - stop
BUD-ZRH (LX J) - 22 hour overnight layover
ZRH-VCE (LX J) - 8 hour layover

MLE-SIN (SQ J) - 11 hour layover

BKK-CDG (TK J) - 14 hour layover
ORY-LIS (TP J) - 20 hour overnight layover
LIS-YYZ (TP J)

155k points each and $665 in taxes + booking fee

However the $665 in fees/taxes may be a little high as it was based on my original itinerary of coming back to YYZ from HND on AC. They couldn't recalculate my new fees after I changed the routing to comeback over the Atlantic but waived the change fee instead.
Wow, that is a great itinerary. How many days in total?

Have fun!

What do you mean they couldnt recalculate? This is at most $300 in tax. You're ok with just giving $300+ to Air Canada for bogus fees?

Do you think the taxes really should be only around $300? I thought both LO and TG has a small amount of fuel surcharges?

I called to change the return leg yesterday and was expecting lower Fuel Surcharges and a $100 change fee each. The agent couldn't calculate the taxes and had to escalate to their support team. They said the new fees remained unchanged. I couldn't believe how the fees could remain exactly the same to the penny, so I asked for an explanation and was transferred directly to their ticketing/support team and he says there's no way to recalculate the XT amount since there's over 20 types of fees on my itinerary and this is due to their old booking system...

Do you guys suggest I call back and ask for the fees to be recalculated? Is this possible when the original amount has $400+ lumped together under XT?

The LO surcharge on that segment is $98.40
I didnt see TG in your itinerary (but I assume its BKK-CDG) - thats $157.

What was the YQ on your previous ticket? If it was a lot more than $255, it may be worth fighting it, if not, best to let it go.

Your European taxes will be a lot, but I doubt it would be $400.
