I've only tried this once, but they denied it, because I was using IKK (though the final ticketed itinerary had no AC after LH F opened).
No, they can build two identical trips on two screens to get everything on hold, but if payment will be from two accounts it must have two separate PNRs. They can link the two PNR, which in my experience usually gets seating assigned together on other star alliance carriers.

That makes sense. So two separate PNRs, linked together. One other issue I just thought of is if it's one PNR, it'll mean the points come from one account rather than two account, then my wife paying her half with her TD ae infinite visa, won't get the insurance coverage because the points didn't come from her account. So two PNRs it is.

How much of it is YQ? Me thinks you got charged for the entire JNB-YVR YQ because GRU-YUL is on AC.

How does one find out YQ prior to booking?
Just when searching a single segment on the AE website?

No, AC has a scam going where they will calculate the YQ based on origin-destination, even if just one longhaul segment is on AC.

ie) YVR - PEK - ICN - BKK - KUL
Even if only AC segment is YVR - PEK, will calculate YQ based on YVR - KUL ?

Correct (or not - depends on what costs more)
This scam is most spectacularly evident on things like YYZ-PEK-SYD - with AC+CA. They will not charge you YQ for YYZ-SYD ($500+) rather than just YYZ-PEK ($200ish)

*I understand CA now has scamcharges, this is just an example.

Slightly higher fees because the dates didn't work out for the direct flight from YYZ to ADD in ET. All in J.

AC Y: YYZ - YUL
LX J: YUL - ZRH - NBO (1st stop)
SA J: NBO - JNB - CPT (destination)
SA J: CPT - JNB - DAR (2nd stop)
ET J: DAR - ADD (1 day layover for a day trip)
MS J: ADD - CAI (1 day layover for a day trip)
MS J: CAI - YYZ (new business class)

150,000 miles and $304 per person.

It looks like you have an open jaw CPT-JNB at your destination but you also have 2 stops as well. I thought that only 1 stop was allowed when you have an open jaw. Good for you if you got it!

It just seems like a lot of YQ - and where the heck would it even come from?

On an 11 sector tix that's just $38/leg in fees, seems reasonable. SEA-YVR alone is $72.80/person; YEG-YVR runs about $80/person each way. Easy to get to $420/person with another 8 legs added to those.

Sounds like an amazing trip - enjoy!
